You don’t have to look very far into the Church world to see that there are groups that significantly disagree on theology. Some groups disagree on small, nuanced, theological positions. Other groups have massively differing positions on theology. Have you ever wondered how this can happen? How can one group be wrong? That is usually the case – one group is wrong. If the disputed positions are mutually exclusive (there is a hell or there isn’t; Jesus is the Messiah or isn’t he; there is one God or are there many; etc.), then someone is wrong. Jesus taught that you can get theology wrong. He told the Sadducees that not only were they wrong but that they were quite wrong. Jesus did something very helpful for us in this passage. He showed where the Sadducees theology was wrong but then he also told them how they made their error. They made an error in their theology because they neither knew the scriptures nor the power of God. This is immensely important for us today because people are still making errors in their theology. You do not have to do much research to find people coming up with all sorts of crazy ideas and their fundamental problem is that they do not know the scriptures or the power of God. In our study of this passage, we will talk about some very practical ways we can protect ourselves from making theological errors.
