The transfiguration was a gift to the Disciples to encourage them in the promise that He has been pointing them to. The cross was a significant stumbling block for the Disciples. The cross was not how they had thought this whole movement would go down. The transfiguration was ballast for the Disciple to put in their boat so that when the storms of the coming events in Jerusalem swamped over them they would not be capsized. In 2 Peter 1:16-18, Peter recounts that “We were eyewitnesses of His majesty.” The transfiguration was bedrock for the Disciples that the cross did not negate Christ’s glory nor was is some interruption in God’s plan. It was also confirmation from heroes of the Old Testament faith and from God Almigthy that there was no way around the Cross.
