This passage of the scribes and the poor widow is a story that is very familiar to anyone who has grown up in the Church. There are many folks that believe that a true believer should live sacrificially like this widow and give everything away – that Jesus is telling us that he expects us to be like this widow and give away all that we have, everything that we have to live on. That real giving is only real when we give away all that we have. So what is the answer? What should the Christian life look like in regards to material possessions and wealth? Is it fine for a Christian to live in a nice house and have a bank account? Is it fine for a Christian to go on a vacation? What about loving our neighbor? What about meeting the needs of those who are poor and oppression in our community, our state, our country, the world? Where is the limit? Is there one? Those are not easy questions to answer. However, this warning to the scribes is a very help insight on how a Christian should view any wealth or resource that they may have.
