Who really is your God?

What is the greatest commandment? Many people who have spent any time in Church will probably be able to correctly answer this question. Most of us will give the answer here “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” This passage is probably very familiar to most of us. However, a problem with familiarity is that in our comfort we can breeze over things. The answer to the question of what is the greatest commandment starts with “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One”. This is an incredibly important part of the answer because if you are not living in the reality that the Lord is your one and only God then talking about loving God and your neighbor does not make a lot of sense. Our loving God and our neighbor finds its meaning in the reality of God being your one and only God. We all need to consider whether our belief in one God is more than an intellectual. We are surrounded by other functional gods; things that we cannot live without. If you have a functional god that is not God, then your statement that you believe that there is only one God is a mere intellectual statement. You are not living like you truly believe the Lord is your God, that the Lord is the one and only. That makes you an idolater. We must flee from our idolatry before we can really love God and our neighbors as we should.
