The religious leaders in the temple did not recognize the authority of Jesus. They did not think that Jesus had any right to clean out the temple or to be teaching on his own authority. He was a trouble maker that they had to deal with. The way they chose to deal with Jesus was by playing this game of asking him for his credentials; the basis of the authority for his actions. This is a game that has not gone away through the centuries. It is a game that is alive and well today. Religious people still play games with God when his authority conflicts with their lives. Following Christ means that we allow God to be the boss of our life.
