When the Gospel Comes Home

We often struggle with what the Gospel is and how it should affect our lives. In Ephesians, Paul helps us understand that the Gospel affects every aspect of our lives. He does so by highlighting how it touches the family and the workplace. The Gospel frees us to love God by loving persons in the everyday moments of life. He calls those who live underneath authority (children & slaves) to obey the Lord by obeying their authorities. He commands those who have authority (parents & masters) to exercise their authority as those underneath God's authority. The result of both is that God is glorified and humans flourish.

Our Hope

In a sinful & broken world, we face a struggle for hope. God's Word gives us hope by giving us a picture of the Messiah. He is the King who reigns perfectly on the throne of David. He is the ultimate King who reverses the curse of sin and ends it forever. When we are tempted to doubt God's promises, God answers our doubt by pointing us to Jesus who displays God's faithfulness as the Messiah. Therefore, Jesus, the perfect Messiah-King, is our hope.

True Unity

Christians know from experience that unity is not an easy thing to have in our relationships or our churches. Yet, Paul begins chapter 4, the turning point in Ephesians by sharing that unity is essential for the Christian life. Christian unity finds its foundation in Triune God Himself. He also emphasizes that Christian unity displays Jesus in our relationships. Therefore, unity in the Christian life God-created unity must characterize the Christian life and community.

The Unity of the New Humanity

True peace often seems to be lacking in our lives and our world. Paul reminds us that this lack of peace is a result of our separation from God because of sin. As Christians, he reminds us that our past shows us our desperate separation. Yet, there is hope because Jesus is our peace and ends the hostility between us and God as well as between peoples in Christ. Because of this, the peace of Christ creates a unified church.

The Invitation

We have a hard time admitting that we need anything, much less that we are completely helpless to accomplish salvation. Yet, God extends an invitation for a rich banquet to everyone in this passage and the only requirement to come is to admit "our need of Him". It is through this invitation through His Son Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit that God brings life to needy and broken people. Because of this, we should come to the Lord at His invitation.
