Grace Union Church

Philadelphia

History of Philadelphia

• Philadelphia was designed to be a political, ideological, andlinguistic incubation chamber in order to “Greekify” the non-Greek world.

• By the time Revelation was written, the individual, cultural languages of people of this region had disappeared, and been replaced by GREEK.”

• Philadelphia was like an ON RAMP for greek thought, culture, and life.

Revelation 3:7-13
7 “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.
8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.
10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.
11 I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.
12 The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name.
13 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

I. Gods wants his Church to be an open door for people to encounter him through.

• The church has been established as a colony of Heaven in the middle of the earth, and the difference of kingdoms and cultures should be tangible.

• Being an open door to people and a culture that don’t know Jesus is central in the purpose of the church and lives of those who make up the church.

II. Point: Our effectiveness as An Open Door is not linked to our own Faculties.

• The church in Philadelphia was not rich in resources.

- The expansion of this church was God’s doing.

Philippians 2:15
...that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.

• The darker things are around you, the brighter Jesus shines from you.

• These Christians were FAITHFUL, which means that they did not participate in all the pagan rituals and functions associated with Greek culture.

- But even without participating in those things THEIR LOVE for people LEFT A MARK on their city and they had GREAT INFLUENCE.

III. Through Jesus you can become the one sure thing in the Hurt and Fear around you.

• Your faithfulness to God and your willingness to Love will make you into a Pillar that God will insert in the middle of the Shaking.
