"People ask, 'What kind of loving God is filled with wrath?' But any loving person is often filled with wrath. In Hope Has Its Reasons, Becky Pippert writes, 'Think how we feel when we see someone we love ravaged by unwise actions or relationships. Do we respond with benign tolerance as we might toward strangers? Far from it…. Anger isn't the opposite of love. Hate is, and the final form of hate is indifference.'

"Pippert then quotes E. H. Gifford, 'Human love here offers a true analogy: the more a father loves his son, the more he hates in him the drunkard, the liar, the traitor.' "She concludes: 'If I, a flawed narcissistic sinful woman, can feel this much pain and anger over someone's condition, how much more a morally perfect God who made them? God's wrath is not a cranky explosion, but his settled opposition to the cancer of sin which is eating out the insides of the human race he loves with his whole being.' "

Scripture Lesson: Luke 16:16-31

16"The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. 17It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.

18"Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

19"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

25"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'

27"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

29"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'

30" 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'

31"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "

                       ~COMMUNITY GROUP/FAMILY WORSHIP ASSIGNMENT~

       1.      What epitaph do you want on your tombstone? Share with each other and open in prayer.

Read Luke 16: 16-31

   2. Read the quotes under the “Reflection” section on page two of this bulletin. Take a few minutes and interact with the longer quote. How does this quote help you in understanding the reality and nature of Hell in light of God’s character?

  1. Does the topic of Hell in the church make you at all nervous? Why or why not? Share with each other how your commitment to Jesus Christ, being his disciple, has altered your view of Hell.

  1. In the sermon entitled “Right Now Counts Forever” what one thing particularly gripped you and what do you plan to do about it in way of applying it to your life? Share these things with one another and pray for each other.

  1.  Remember to “preach the gospel to yourself and to one another.” Whenever we have an encounter with God in His church and through His Word there are going to be areas highlighted where we haven’t lived according to His plan. “Preaching the gospel to ourselves and to one another” is reminding one another that Christ obeyed (always) where we have failed and that he paid the price for our failure on the cross—so we’re forgiven and free! Therefore, end your time with prayers of thanksgiving and praise to Christ for his wonderful gift of salvation!
