Cinderella and Spiritual Blessings

We start our series on Ephesians with a story about Cinderella. Cinderella is actually a wonderful analogy for the way God loves us and draws us to himself. We need to fill in a few gaps but it shows us what the first part of Ephesians 1 shows us - that God in his wisdom chose us and drew us to himself to be holy and blameless in his sight. We didn't deserve it but that doesn't matter. He doesn't love us because we are beautiful. We are beautiful because he loves us.

Finding hope in the self-sacrificing God

We all need hope when trouble hits, but where do we find it? Look to our God who sacrificed himself so that we could have life. If he paid such an extreme cost to save us in the beginning, won't he finish the job? If so, then it is a blessing when our world is shaken, because it throws us back on God in a deeper way.

Disciples bear more and more fruit

Disciples bear more and more fruit. Fruit is the product of life under God's covenant, and so it comes in many shapes and sizes. But we don't make the fruit. God does - but only after pruning us to make us more fruitful. Everyone benefits from fruit, but it is God who ultimately benefits the most, for it is his glory. So all we need to do is cultivate the right conditions for the fruit to grow.

Disciples love one another

Disciples are true disciples if they evidence love for one another. On the eve of Christ's crucifixion he tells his disciples how he expects them to carry on his work - by loving one another just as he had loved them.

Disciples grow in love for God's word

The second mark of a disciple is one who loves the word of God, and abides in that word more and more.
