Loving God by fearing him

The first mark of a disciple is one who loves Jesus. But to love God as he really is is to fear him. He is a holy and awesome God and we approach him with trembling. But this doesn't push us away from God, rather we are drawn towards him because he is so awesome.

Marks of a disciple

A disciple of Jesus can be characterised by i) a love for Jesus, ii) a love for His word, iii) a love for one another and iv) bearing fruit. This sermon begins to explore the first of those.

Faithful to the end

At the end of your life, what would you like to be remembered for? Joshua is remembered as one who was faithful. In his last days Joshua calls the people to remember God's faithfulness. He challenges them to be faithful to the covenant themselves. And he sets up reminders to remain faithful. We can be inspired by Joshua's example.

Caleb the wholehearted disciple

Caleb is recognised as an exceptional disciple largely because he followed the Lord with his whole heart. The first 40 years of his life were spent growing as a leader. The second 40 were spent refusing to become bitter about being stuck in the desert because of his faithless peers. But it was in the last decades of his life that Caleb really excelled. With abounding faith in the old man, Caleb says "Give me this mountain" and through faith in God successfully defeats his enemies. If we have the same undivided allegiance to Jesus we can also claim our portion of the Promised Land.

Press on to take the Promised Land

It happens so often. We get stuck. We come to Jesus in a rush of enthusiasm but then things fade and we wind up getting stuck. We cling to things that kind of make life work, and we settle for compromise. But Jesus came to set us free. Therefore we need to get up, fling our cloak of comfort aside and run to Jesus. Seek his mercy and find freedom from compromise.
