Circumcising the heart

Just before God leads his people into the Promised Land has one more preparation for them to make - circumcise all the males! Not the sort of thing you would do to an attacking army on the eve of their conquest - incapacitate the whole group. But God wanted them to know that being true to him and the covenant between them and him was more important than anything else. They would conquer only in His strength. So too we must put off everything that comes between us and God - the sinful nature that so naturally draws us away from God - so that we can overcome in His strength.

Crossing that river

After much preparation it is time for Joshua to lead God's people into the Promised Land. But something stands in the way - the Jordan River. God makes a point of bringing them to this 'river of impossibility' so that he can demonstrate his power. We too can cross the river of impossibility and move into the Promised Land of life and peace as we look to Jesus and the provision he made. But we need to do that with the fear of the Lord.

Rahab - the faith of a sinner

God is not interested in how good we are, he is interested in whether we have faith in him. In contrast to the Israelites, Rahab the prostitute had real faith in the living God. She had a large view of God, believing that he would enable his people. Therefore Rahab was drawn into God's people and recognised as a great woman of faith.

The secret of prosperity and success

God wanted Joshua to be prosperous and successful - but not in the sense of being rich. He wanted Joshua to cut through and achieve victory over the Promised Land. And the secret to that success was to be God's law. God challenged Joshua to talk about it, to meditate on it, and to obey it. We are called to do the same today with God's word.
