Exchanging Lies for Truth
The problem with Israel is our own, it is the gap between what we believe in theory and what we believe in practice. I may agree that God is sovereign (theoretical belief), but slip into deep anxiety when I am afraid or out of control (functional disbelief). What it means to grow in grace is to see the gap narrowed between what I confess to be truth and what I functionally believe in the moment. If it’s true that behind every sin is a lie, we are able to find a road out of the rut of despair and the feeling that our emotions and actions are inevitable. Nehemiah is helping us to see the path of hope in hopelessness, joy in the midst of suffering, and courage to fight our shame and disbelief.

Guarding Our Treasury
Who will shut the doors of this defiled Temple? Who will rise up? Who will give a pure sacrifice? Is there even a priest of God that holy? Is there a priest that loves and does not despise His name? Yes, yes, yes! Malachi’s promise came true. His prophecy has come to pass. His prediction is sure since it is from the mouth of God.

Feeding and Tending Jesus' Flock
We are children of God, no longer orphans in this world without Him. We are also His ambassadors in this world as His sent people. Jesus draws us to Himself so that we can have and live by the love of the Father, then Jesus sends us into the world as His missional people. In fact, when you read Jesus’ words in John chapter 20, you begin to see what He had in mind...

The Restoring Power of God's Steadfast Love
Are you tired, burdened, anxious, angry, or depressed? If you need to be restored, then this message is for you. It is the story about the steadfast love of God which alone is able to restore his people and give them hope in the midst of this difficult and trying world.

A God Worth Waiting For
Was it worth it? Were the radical sacrifices made by God's people throughout Scripture worth it? When we glimpse the glory of God, we see that all of our suffering, as great as it might be, is not worthy to be compared to the beauty of the glory of God revealed in the face of our Savior Jesus Christ.

How Do We Respond To Trials and What Does That Say About What We Believe About God?
What we believe about God is best demonstrated in the midst of trials. In fact, how we respond to trials reveals to the world what we believe about God.

The God of the Nevertheless
Today, we, like the Israelites, often lose sight of God and are not mindful of the wonders he has performed for his people through the sacrifice of his only Son, Jesus. However, God has not changed. He is from everlasting to everlasting and he is the God of the nevertheless. Whatever sin, whatever failure, however awful, his grace is greater. He is the God who sent his only Son to die so that he could save sinners, and now he calls us all to look upon him and find forgiveness for our sins.

Partying that Provokes
The reason we struggle so mightily with joy and celebration is because we have forgotten. We have forgotten what God is like. We have forgotten how good He is. We have forgotten how merciful He is. We have forgotten how He’s rescued us. We have forgotten that He is a God of great joy. We have forgotten that He loves to be with us. We have forgotten that we are grafted into this family: we are children of Abraham because we believe in Christ and we are to pick up His same heart of celebration and rejoicing.

From Tears to Rejoicing: Responding to the Word of God
As we study Nehemiah 8 we will take time to consider what it is about God that is able to move his people, the Israelites, from weeping to rejoicing and feasting. It is our goal that the God they saw would be the God you would see as you ponder Him in His word and that you too, would find yourself overwhelmed with joy and moved to celebrate our great God.

Giving and Grace
The Law no longer condemns us and it no longer curses us. Instead the law has become the way we learn what it looks like to be fully human. It is now nothing to fear, but something we learn of so that we might follow Jesus in response to His grace. The Spirit now shows you how Jesus lived up to the law instead of condemning you and convicting you in all the ways you’ve failed to live up. When you fail, you’re failing to live like who you truly are in Jesus. You’re already seen by the Father as keeping the law, there’s no need to use it to get His favor.
