Risk of the Mission
Have you become accustomed to the brokenness in your life and the lives around you? Have you guarded your heart by keeping your distance? Have you protected yourself by having such meager expectations for God? Have you said things like, “If you don’t expect anything, you won’t be disappointed?†Can you see how hopeless and devastating it is to expect so little of such a large God. He is a big God. We need to come to Him with all our needs, especially big ones!

Mission of the King
What can we learn about our mission through this great work of Nehemiah? How can we put some meat on the bones of missional calling? How should God’s people now respond if they’ve been broken over the needs of our city? God loves to use the simple, common, humble people who He chooses to raise up and use in incredible ways. God is calling us to no less that what we see in Nehemiah’s life and example.

Weeping for Our City
The true story of the world begins in a garden and ends in a city. Eden is an amazing and beautiful place that God planted for the first humans to enjoy and cultivate. God’s desire was that we would build a culture and city of justice, love, compassion, mercy, truth, righteousness and most importantly, deep fellowship with Him as we live out our designed purpose of making His name great in this world.

Nehemiah - An Introduction
We all feel homesick. We have a place where we can put our stuff, but it's not home. We're a group of people who miss the same place. Eden echoes in each of our memories. Except this place isn't imaginary; it's real. And we're not going to get it back by trying to create a new home for ourselves. That is what all of humanity has attempted to do. We've all tried to create a place where we can say, "This place is right and good and is finally home." Oh, we might feel that for a short period of time, but our souls cry out for Eden.

From Repentance to Rejoicing
The Bible shows us that even a great man like David the King is fundamentally flawed and capable of the deepest sin. Not only that, but each of us are sinners in need of a Savior. This is why we need repentance. It’s the first step to understanding anything about God’s grace or His healing power in our lives.

The Stranger on the Road
The Scriptures teach us that we are all in bondage, we are all enslaved. Jesus came to release us from a much deeper bondage than slavery. This is why Jesus came! Because so many people missed this, they can’t understand why Jesus had to die. They can’t understand what all these facts about Jesus meant. They don’t see themselves in need of spiritual redemption from the bondage of their sin. What about you, do you see you need the kind of redemption that Jesus was bringing? Or are you still hoping that Jesus will bring you redemption from your circumstances? Are you still looking for your vision of redemption?

Transforming Grace
“When I was ten I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.†- C.S. Lewis To be so self-absorbed, so fearful of the opinions of others, so defined by what others think, is a sure way to miss the real Jesus. To be like a child, to be willing to look foolish for Jesus is a crushing blow to your pride, and it is a necessary step to meet the real Jesus. Have you gotten over the fear of looking childish? It’s one of the ways you know you’re growing up.

Christmas Comfort
Scrooge was shown his future – he was to die alone and sad, and fearful, but here Isaiah gives us a glimpse of true comfort: because Jesus triumphed over the grave, our future as a broken community is to rise on eagle’s wings!Isn’t it comforting that history ends with this picture – a picture of one of the most tender things one person can do for another, which is to gently touch their cheek and dry their tears? You have to be in intimate relationship with someone to do that don’t you? And you see what we’re shown in Scripture at the end of Revelation is that Jesus Himself will come to you, and with the very hands that were pierced with wounds of love for you, will brush away your final tears, which are precious to him, and will store them away in his bottle with all the rest that you cry right now. Then, you will know joy, and it will be a greater joy than Scrooge even knew on Christmas morning.

Advent: Joy 2008
John 15:11: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.†Hebrews 12:1-2: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.†John 17:13: “But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.†We can fight for joy as we trust in Jesus and His gospel. We fight because Jesus fought for us. We have joy because Jesus is filled with joy for His Father.
