How to Make an Eternal Impact in a Here and Now Culture

By seeking Jesus’ kingdom, you can make an eternal impact in peoples’ lives by demonstrating that this life is not about this life.

How to Make an Eternal Impact in a Here and Now Culture...

Bring the Future into the Present(7:1-12)

God is “stirring” chaos and confusion which is a sign of the divine judgment of God in the last days (7:2; Rev. 17:15).

Out of the raging sea, God is in control of cultures’ “beasts” because God “made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble” (7:3; Prov. 16:4).

Beast/Ruler #1-Lion>Babylon (7:4)

Beast/Ruler #2-Bear>Persia (7:5)

Beast/Ruler #3-Leopard>Greece (7:6)

Beast/Ruler #4-Ten-Horned Beast>Rome (7:7-8)

In a shifting culture where it appears the anti-God culture is winning, the cultures of this world’s kingdoms will stand before God-“the Ancient of Days”-who is the ultimate authority to bring final judgment (7:9; Rev. 1:9-20).

At the end of time, God will call “court” into session to render “judgment” giving both verdicts and sentences (7:10; Rev. 20:11-15).

The kingdoms and cultures of this world will be “broken in pieces…so that not a trace of them could be found” (Dan. 2:35).

In a Here and Now Culture Making an Eternal Impact Requires...

1)  Living Today in Light of Eternity

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”-Ephesians 5:15-17

“It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective. Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in; aim at earth and you will get neither.”-C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity

2)  Knowing a Day of Accounting is Near

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”-Hebrews 4:13

Knowing a day of accounting is approaching changes everything.

How to Make an Eternal Impact in a Here and Now Culture...

Seek Jesus’ Kingdom First(7:13-22)

Following his cross and resurrection, Jesus ascends “with the clouds of heaven” as the ascending “Son of man” having fulfilled his mission (7:13; Exod. 16:10, 24:16, 34:5; Ps. 97:2, 104:3; Isa. 19:1; Nah. 1:3; Acts 7:56; Heb. 11:7-9; Rev. 1:13).

With the rise and fall of kingdoms and cultures, God is setting up Jesus’ “dominion” so that “all peoples, nations, and languages should serve” him (7:14).

When “anxious” and “alarmed” about the current chaos, you should want to know “the truth” and “the interpretation” of what God is revealing (7:15-16).

God is setting up a kingdom that will never be destroyed or invaded because Jesus’ return will cause his kingdom to visibly reign over all the earth (7:18; Rev. 19:11-20:6).

“This is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.”-1 John 2:18

While the culture believes it sits in “judgment” over the church, the church will ultimately sit in “judgment” over the culture as “the saints will judge the world” (7:21-22; 2 Cor. 6:2).

In a Here and Now Culture Making an Eternal Impact Requires...

1)  Living for the Coming Kingdom

“Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added unto you…”-Matthew 6:31-33

In the wreckage of this world’s rebellious cultures, live as if Jesus’ kingdom is your present pursuit and your future hope.

2)  Bringing Outsiders into the Kingdom

“Many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and their glory is in their shame. Their minds are set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”-Philippians 3:18-20

Culture is looking for somebody to speak the truth by giving an “interpretation” of what is presently happening and what it means for the future.

How to Make an Eternal Impact in a Here and Now Culture...

Persevere Through the Degradation(7:23-28)

The fourth beast is a violent ruler who will “devour...trample…[and] break” all the kingdoms of the earth (7:23-24).

Culture will become increasingly hostile toward God in an effort to “wear” you “out” so you walk away from the faith (7:25).

“Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”-Jesus in Matthew 24:12-13.

Ultimately, Jesus’ “everlasting kingdom” will defeat and outlive the kingdoms of this world (7:26-27; Ps. 82:8; Is. 27:13; Dan. 7:14, 27; Rev. 11:15).

In a Here and Now Culture Making an Eternal Impact Requires...

1)  Persevering Under Pressure

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”-James 1:12

In a here and now culture, you have to persevere knowing your reward is not in this world (Mt. 6:33; 19:29; Mk. 10:29).

2)  Living with Intentional Urgency

“The time has come and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news.”-Jesus in Mark 1:15

You impact lives for eternity as you call people to turn from this “here and now” culture and enter the kingdom through faith in Jesus.

Challenge-Is the culture impacting me or am I eternally impacting the culture?
