A Kingdom Comes to the Promised Land (1 Samuel)

Like the surrounding nations, Israel demanded a king. Not only does their choice effectively reject God, it also abdicates their calling as a "royal priesthood, holy nation" (Ex. 19:6). 1 Samuel transitions Israel from regional judges to national monarchy. Transitions are not easy. King Saul, the premier king, proves inept; the neighboring Philistines prove pesky; but David, the king-in-waiting, proves that trust in God fills life with hope, meaning, strength, and endurance. In the end, this sermon calls citizens of heaven to trust in God and do good.
