Week 3: One Another's

Galatians 5:13-16
Galatians 5:13-16 (NIV)
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh ; rather, serve one another humbly in love.
For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

Serve one another
1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

Natural Gifts vs Spiritual Gifts
SPIRITUAL GIFTS are gifts given supernaturally by God for the purpose of strengthening, encouraging and building-up the Body of Christ.

Understanding Spiritual Gifts
* Gifts are often the cause of DISUNITY and DIVISION

1 Corinthians 12:1-14
1 Corinthians 12:1-14 (NIV)
Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. Unity and Diversity in the Body Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

1 Corinthians 14:1-5
1 Corinthians 14:1-5 (NIV)
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.
For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

1 Corinthians 14:12
1 Corinthians 14:12 (NIV)
So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.

1 Corinthians 14:39
1 Corinthians 14:39 (NIV)
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

Theology of Spiritual Gifts
1) ALL CHRISTIANS have been given spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit
     • No one is SHORTED
2) There are DIFFERENT GIFTS that are distributed
     • No one is WELL-ROUNDED
3) Some people have MORE than one gift
     • Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30)
     • Gifts aren’t distributed equally, but we are equally responsible with the gifts we’ve been given
4) There are NO SUPERIOR GIFTS given
     • There is NO ROOM for ‘Spiritual Elitism’

God's Spirit works primarily to benefit the Body of Christ, NOT just the individual believer

How do we discern gifts?
God’s Spirit works through believers to proclaim Jesus’s glory

Is there something that I can do that can build-up, encourage and edify the Body of Christ, whether I can name it or not?
