Acts #1 - You Can't Go it Alone

In the face of all that is broken and gone wrong around us, the surprising proclamation is that the church is the last hope of the world. The reconciliation, justice, economic fairness, and joy of life won't come through government or science or sheer luck, but through a community that intentionally forms itself around what God loves in Christ. In the ordinary community called the church, devoted to Christ's teachings, and to fellowship that dares to cross racial and social divides, and to breaking bread with Christ-like acceptance of sinners saved by grace alone, and to prayer expecting the wonders of God, the world is changed for the better. Part 1 of 'How the Spirit's Church Acts.' Acts 2:42-47

Experience God's Presence in the wonder of our pardon

Experiencing God through the wonder of our pardon. Every day we miss opportunities to know and be assured that the Lord is with us because we think we’re pretty good people. We don’t take our sin seriously. The menu encourages us to try a dessert saying it is sinfully decadent. The travel brochure entices you to guilty pleasures because after all, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas (not true, by the way). We prefer the language of mistake, weakness and ‘that’s just the way I am’ to sin, guilt, temptation and repentance. One powerful, lasting way we experience our Savior is through the pardon of our sins. We’ll read Psalm 51 to remember again that the Triune God is the pardoning God who has mercy on us.

Experience the Wonder of God's Presence in Our Prayers

The story of King Hezekiah’s healing is so important to the wonder of life with God that it is told twice (1 Kings 20 & Isaiah 38) and then referred to a third time (2 Chronicles 32:24). We’ll read the account in 1st Kings 20:1-11. In the middle of the story, Hezekiah prays to God. And within moments Hezekiah receives a revelation and understanding of what is to come. It’s not that every prayer is answered this way. But the story does make us wonder at this first act of thanksgiving and faith we call prayer. We’re practicing the presence of God. And so far we have journeyed with Jacob in confessing that the Lord is with us but we so often miss his presence. And we have renewed our wonder of creation’s proclamation of God’s handiwork as creator. With Hezekiah’s story we’ll be encouraged and challenged to renew our prayer lives as another way to be assured of God’s presence, even in our deepest trails and worries.

The Wonder of God's Creation Proclamation

Begining our practice of the presence of God we undertsand that human beings are made to experience and respond to the Lord’s presence, who is God-with-us. But we also admit that because of the sin and the brokenness of this world we miss the presence of God. But the Lord is gracious, and reveals his presence in many ways. One way is through creation. Genesis 1 proclaims that nature is created for the glory of God. Applying the love of God with our heart, soul, mind and strength to the wonder of creation helps us pay attention to God’s presence in nature. So we’ll encourage one another in faith exercises on the wonder of the Creator God. As article 2 of the Belgic Confession says: We know God . . . by the creation, preservation, and government of the universe, since that universe is before our eyes like a beautiful book in which all creatures, great and small, are as letters to make us ponder the invisible things of God . . .

Choose Life

To live in relationship with God is to find and to choose life. God is not just religious exercises and individualistic rituals. Faith chooses life, and life is found in life with God, trusting and obeying his word and commands.
