RACIAL RECONCILIATION, THE GOSPEL, AND THE CHURCH (Topical Message * Ephesians 2:13-16) 01-25-2015

1. Some Examples of Racism (pride, self-righteousness, etc.)

● in the Bible (Ephesians 2:14; Esther 2; Jonah 4; John 4:9; Luke 9:51-56; Ac 22:21f)

● in History & our Modern culture (in the U.S./Western World)

→ Native Americans (quote about Native American/U.S. relations by Michael T. Cooper)

→ Jews (quote about Auschwitz from Joe Carter/Editor of The Gospel Coalition)

→ Hispanics (quote from “Harvest of Empire” by Juan Gonzalez)

→ African-Americans (quote about African American relations with Police by Pastor Thabiti Anyabwile)

2. Racism, Jesus, & the Gospel: a Christian-theological perspective

● Racism, our sin nature & fallen world

→ the root problem of racism is sin

→ racism is driven by pride, greed, fear, revenge, ignorance, & the evil one

→ racism is individual & systematic, in the oppressor & the oppressed

→ King Jesus will end racism when He returns

● Christ’s victory thru the Cross (Eph 2)

→ we are dead in our sin & at enmity with God & one another

→ God makes us alive thru Christ, who reconciles us with God & one another

→ So be saved by God’s grace thru faith in Christ & live as His people

3. Racial Reconciliation & the Church: Where do we go from here?

● Embrace a “cross-cultural” Christian theology & fellowship

● Repent of racism & worldliness, and bear with one another (quote about the Southern Baptist Convention by Joe Carter/Editor of The Gospel Coalition)

● Be holistic in our prophetic voice & embrace corporate reconciliation (see “A Case for Reparations” by Ta-Nehisi Coates, in “The Atlantic” journal, June 2014).

● Christ is coming back for His purified & unified bride – so live accordingly
