When were Your Eyes Opened?

Faith is not based on a lack of evidence that science will someday fill in...It is not believing with little or no evidence or despite the evidence, or at least what science calls the evidence, either. There are more kinds of evidence than just scientific evidence, you know. Faith really is a matter of responding to what it is about the life that overflows the lives we normally try to live, or that overflows the fine ways that we have tried to think and thereby to gain dominion over the world or others, or even to control our own lives.... So, why are there fewer ears now? Why are so many more fewer eyes being opened? Not because science has actually shown us that what we are talking about is incredible. Life does have a meaning, it does have a purpose, and it is more than science, it is more than money, and it is more than the shallow applause of our peers. We have souls, and they are meant for purpose. That is what the Resurrection is for. That is what I hope your eyes have been opened to.

Fear and Great Joy

In the Resurrection the world has been made new. It is made new here in this church and in every gathering of the faithful across the world, for, in the Resurrection, there is no American or Chinese or Mexican or Syrian, black or white. You are God’s new creation; all of you. Celebrate that new creation with each other, and then go out to love and serve the Lord. Serve him in your refusal to accept the old divisions, the divisions of us and them, the divisions of fear and resentment, privilege, race, nation, wealth and power. Serve the Lord in the full freedom of goodness that he has given you by making you part of his life on this day. Go out and tell the world in all your words and your deeds that Christ is risen, for Christ is risen, indeed.

Have Therefore This Mind...

Let Us Also Go

Often, we overlook the death part of Holy Week. If we talk about it, we tend to talk about it in terms of the tragedy of the Cross...whatever else it might be, the cross was no tragedy, no accident, no mistake...The only way for us to know what was really meant by it is to accept it,...for those who are willing to follow the path of the Cross, never forsaking truth and never forsaking the gift of life we can give others, they will find eternal life.
