In chapter 1 we will look at Paul’s instruction to Titus to set up Church eldership on the island of Crete.  Why did they need elders and what were they protecting against?  What kind of people was the Apostle Paul looking for?

QUALIFICATION FOR ELDERSHIP (Verses 5-9)

An elder must be above reproach.

A good elder/leader must be a tested follower of Christ’s teaching.

REASON FOR ELDERSHIP  (Verses 10-16)

To protect against  religious tradition & commandments of men.

To protect against the JESUS-AND gospel.

The JESUS-AND gospel can only lead to:

1. Pride

2. Despair

3. Apathy

16  They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.

Practical atheism is when we SAY we believe in God but by our ACTIONS we deny is authority in our lives.
