A God Who Cares: For the Unborn
1 Amens
Intro: Aliza Shvarts final ART project at Yale: Every month, for 9 months, she would artificially inseminate herself, then induce an abortion. She then put her blood on sheets, put them around a cube and projected videos of her doing all of this as the final installation of her project.
Some call it a hoax, but she says it is real. Either way – abortion is being done as an art form! Shvarts explains it is to show that everything is just a myth. She wrote, “it is a myth that ovaries and a uterus are ‘meant’ to birth a child.” LORD, have mercy! What have we become?
Our country has become so cold to human life that murder is now seen as art by some.
Praise God that we have a God who cares!
Proposition: Unlike many humans, God cares about life. And God cares greatly about innocent life. And there is no life more innocent than that of the unborn. David teaches us about how God cares for the unborn and what that means for us in Psalm 139.
I. God creates and knows every human life which begins at conception. (13-16)
David says some important things about the unborn. God forms each one of us. He personally made each and every baby in the womb. We are His wonderful creation. He has a great plan for every life.
Let’s break that down into two things we learn about the unborn from this passage:
- Every unborn child God personally knows, He created, and is wonderful!
There is no such thing as an unwanted child. No matter the situation in which that child was conceived and no matter the health of that child – that is a God wanted child.
Ideas have consequences. Evolution being taught in our schools has devalued all human life. We are all just cosmic accidents. Ex. Scribble on a paper. (tear it). Did anyone care? Tear the Mona Lisa. One can be tossed – the other has priceless value.

Also notice in our passage the unborn child is not just part of the woman’s body to God as pro-abortion people claim. The life is separate and individually known and loved by God. The mother doesn’t even know she is pregnant when it happens – but God does.
God cares about the unborn – for it is He who created them, fearfully and wonderfully made.
- God has a great plan for every unborn child’s life.
Abigail has memorized three verses so far. And her third one is Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
I can imagine God whispering that to children as they grow in the womb.
Ex. Commercial with long legged man who cycles the earth’s rotation. Everyone has purpose.
Ex. Simon Birch. Everyone telling him he was useless. He told everyone he was a miracle and God had a purpose for him. In the end a school bus of kids went down. He was the only one who could fit in the windows, calm the kids down, and get them out.
II. We should line up our beliefs with God’s. (17-18)
God’s thoughts are way beyond our thoughts. We can’t even come close to ever fulfilling grasping them. However, when we know God’s thoughts on a subject then we MUST match up our own beliefs with His thoughts. His thoughts are in fact truth.
Abortion is a heavily debated topic. Many Christians remain silent on it or are even pro-choice. They focus on not wanting to make decisions for other people. But what are God’s thoughts on abortion? Some rightly point out that the word abortion is never in the Bible. True – but neither is trinity, but we know it is true. And there are many passages that tell us God’s stance on abortion without using the word:
The Lord hates… hands that shed innocent blood. Proverbs 6:16-17
And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. Acts 17:25
5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” Jeremiah 1:5
“Did not He who made me in the womb make him, and the same one fashion us in the womb?” Job 31:15
Isaiah 49:5 “And now says the Lord, who formed me from the womb to be His servant…”
“You shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill one who has been born.” (Didache – First catechism in 100-150 AD, teachings of the Apostles)
God’s thoughts on the subject are clear. But our country is not matching up with God’s thoughts.
Stats: 1.5 Million Abortions a year since Roe – that is over 4000 a day!
80% Not Married
2nd Most common surgery (to circumcision)
1 out of 5 identify themselves as “born again” or “evangelical”
About 1% from rape or incest
89-95% simply don’t want the child according to Planned Parenthood
Worldwide: Possibly 50-60 million abortions a year!
Summary of current law: (Politically Correct Death, 34):
“It is safe to say that in the first six months of pregnancy a woman can have an abortion for no reason, but in the last three months she can have it for any reason.”
Our country’s thoughts are clearly not God’s. What should we do?
III. We should actively promote God’s justice. (19)
David cries out for justice in verse 19. He says, “God – silence those who stand up against you.” Every believer should cry out for the justice of God – and that includes justice for the unborn.
“We should speak on behalf of the unborn and contend for the sanctity of all human life from conception to natural death.” – BF&M 2000, Article 15: The Christian and Social Order
Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18
“Christians must be the people of life in the midst of a culture of death, even as we are children of light among the children of darkness.” – Al Mohler
How do we stand up for justice as people of life?
- Pour love on those most vulnerable to having an abortion.
Our opposition to abortion must always be coupled with support for unwed mothers, counseling centers, practical help for under-age moms, and the like. Christianity is not just being against something. It is an action of love – not just for the baby but also the mothers. People must come to realize that being pro-life is far more pro-woman than pro-abortion pretends to be.
Ex. Debate battle with liberal in high school over abortion. She left the room crying. Later a guy told me I won him over in that debate. It wasn’t worth it. I was more interested in winning a debate than showing love. Let your love for life promote love.
- Pray.
- Present facts and promote information.
"Nothing has been as damaging to our cause as the advances in technology which have allowed pictures of the developing fetus, because people now talk about that fetus in much different terms than they did fifteen years ago. They talk about it as a human being, which is not something that I have an easy answer how to cure." - pollster Harrison Hickman speaking to the 1989 conference of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL)
Science and technology is on our side on this one.
Ex. Popular movie: Your baby has fingernails.
- Vote.
Supreme Court changed law to allow 10s of millions of abortions since Roe. Presidents pick judges. We are probably only one judge away from changing that ruling!
Not about Democrat/Republican. There are pro-lifers on each side. It is about making sure the President you vote for will pick pro-life supporting judges. Also, Congressman will then ratify those choices.
- Give.
How? Serve, Help, and give. I would love to see 30 people take one of these cards. We would be ten percent of what a CPC of Eastern Illinois needs.
“It only takes 300 partners @ $10 per month to provide pregnancy tests, educational literature, baby needs, counseling, trained volunteers, and a warm caring environment in which to counsel. You can make a difference!”
Conclusion: Schindler’s List. This ring, this car would buy more lives.
