Daniel 9:1-27

I.         Historical Facts

  • The historical accuracy of this text is astonishing
  • Daniel received this revelation app. 70 years after captivity
  • Medo-Persia Empire is now in control over the Babylonians
  • Daniel is studying the book of Jeremiah

 Jeremiah 25:10-12  “…I will take from them the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride,…. This whole land will be a desolation and a horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.  Then it will be when seventy years are completed I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation,' declares the Lord…

Jeremiah 29:10   "…says the Lord, 'When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place.   

II.   Marks of Effective Prayer

       1. Based on God’s word

       2. Includes full surrender & repentance

       3. Asks God to do what only He can do 

       4. Focuses on God’s glory

       5. Receives an answer  

III. The Prophecy  

  1. It is for sure 
  2. It is for Israel/Jerusalem
  3. Christ will put an end to Israel’s sins
  4. Soon the Antichrist will rule in Jerusalem
  5. Christ will restore Israel & physically reign in Temple/Jerusalem

  1. How often do you pray during the day and what most characterizes your prayers? (example—praise, thanks, requests)
  2. Do you think about Biblical prophecy very often? Why or why not?

II. Overview of Scripture

    1.  Read Daniel 9 out loud. Give an overall synopsis of the chapter.

III. Growing deeper

  1. How did Daniel come to be in Babylon?  See 1:1-7
  2. Why was Daniel selected to be a leader in both the Babylonian and Medo-Persian empires?  (1:9-17, 2:1-16, 46-49)
  3. What made Daniel pray the way he did according to vs. 2?
  4. What does "I set my face" (Dan 9:3) show us about Daniel's belief in prayer? See also Daniel 6:10 and James 4:3.
  5. In what form did the angel Gabriel appear to Daniel and why? Vs 20-23
  6. What should the phrase "you are highly esteemed” (very loved and desirable) do for us and our prayer lives? Vs. 23, 3, 17-19
