The Lord of the Sabbath: Mark 2.23 - 3.6

The issue is: which is a more necessary use of my time at the moment: showing mercy by helping this needy person, or doing some other act of worship and service to God? He does not first ask, “What are the rules and what do people think I should do?” but “Who needs to be helped?” He presumes that religion and its institutions are not ends in themselves. God gave the law for the benefit of human kind. Its intention is summed up in love for the neighbor, which is worth more than burnt sacrifices heaped together (Micah 6:6-8).
