What is the Reason for Jesus?

[Due to technical difficulties there is no audio for this sermon, but we're sure Jason is going to preach it again someday! Here are some of the notes from the sermon.]

Every Advent is special and this year it is extra special for our church. This is our first Christmas together. We are a baby church and it is great to be able to celebrate the birth of Jesus together. So much has happened since January, when we held a series of interest meetings. Some of you came and listed and more surprisingly, some of you actually stayed! During those early months we painted a picture of what we thought God would be happy with: a church who worshiped and followed him completely, a church who would love one another compassionately, a church who would serve the world courageously. We are growing up in that and we need extra grace from God to help us.

In the Spring we studied 1 Corinthians, which is a letter by Paul written to a very young church, like us. We talked about what it means to be a community of Christ's followers and what the love of Jesus looks like in our lives when it is expressed in our lives.

In the summer months several of you went out of state to do some mission work. This gave Robert and me some time to prepare for our September launch. Since September we have been meeting on the 2nd Sunday evening for a larger worship gathering and on the in-between weeks we have been meeting in our home groups. Each Sunday is a great Sunday and it seems that God's presence and love are ever present with us in our meetings.

The next 12 months are bright for us too. In January we are going to be starting a Bible reading Plan, whereby we will read the New Testament and half of the Old Testament by this time next year. God is going to speak to us through that. In February we are going to begin meeting for our larger worship gathering every week. That's a big step for us. We are looking forward to it. I think that tonight is a microcosm of what 2008 can be for us. We are celebrating Advent and are a part of Advent Conspiracy. We are doing good works and we are having good words. We want to minister to our city with our words and our actions. Jesus did both. We can't neglect one for the other. We need to do both.

I had a lot of wiggle room for the teaching time tonight. It's Advent and is a time to focus our attention on the birth of Jesus. I could have pulled out my heavy artillery tonight, maybe brought a few clips from The Christmas Story or the Grinch or even Elf, with Will Ferrel. Instead, I thought I'd save those for a rainy day. There is a temptation to isolate Advent, the arrival of Jesus, from the rest of the story. We come to Christmas and focus on Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men, and Peace, and Love, etc and we isolate the birth of Jesus from the rest of his life and away from the rest of the story itself. We often hear said, "Jesus is the reason for the season!" Yes, that's true. But the next is vitally important, if Jesus is the reason for the season, then what is the reason for Jesus? There's more to the story than just the crib. There is also the cross.

We look at the nativity scenes and look upon baby Jesus and almost put on hold the fact that he grew up, was able to talk and preached. He preached about God, about Himself, about us and our need for a renewed and reconciled relationship with God. We can very easily look at the crib and forget the cross. So, what I would like for us to do tonight is look at the broader story of Scripture and look specifically at prophesies that Jesus fulfilled. By doing this we will see that the very first promise God made to us is Jesus. We will see that in Jesus prophesies are fulfilled: his birth, his death, his character, the fact that Gentiles would seek him (an unbelievable truth during Old Testament times).

[At this point in the message Jason handed out a resource from Rich Deem which highlights the various prophesies Jesus fulfilled. The original, unedited resource can be found here. We hope that you will print this out and look at it in your times of Bible Study or devotion. If you want to learn more about Jesus then this is a great thing to study. Notice the character of Jesus and the human response to him. Look at the steadfast determination of God to love, forgive and redeem us. This gives us a better appreciation of what Jesus' arrival here means.]

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel." (Genesis 3:15)

seed of a woman

But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, (Galatians 4:4)

And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." (Genesis 12:3)

descendant of Abraham

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. (Matthew 1:1)

There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:7)

heir to the throne of David

"He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end." (Luke 1:32-33)

"But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity." (Micah 5:2)

Born in Bethlehem

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register, along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child.... And she gave birth to her first-born son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:4-5, 7)

Thus says the LORD, "A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more." (Jeremiah 31:15)

slaughter of children

Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its environs, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the magi. Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; and she refused to be comforted, because they were no more." (Matthew 2:16-18)

When Israel was a youth I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son. (Hosea 11:1)

flight to Egypt

And he arose and took the Child and His mother by night, and departed for Egypt; and was there until the death of Herod, that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, "Out of Egypt did I call My Son." (Matthew 2:14-15)

"I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, `Thou art My Son, today I have begotten Thee.'" (Psalms 2:7)

declared the Son of God

"He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;" (Luke 1:32). And behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." (Matthew 3:17)

"The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him." (Deuteronomy 18:15)

a prophet

and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you... "Moses said, `The Lord God shall raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed in everything He says to you.'" (Acts 3:20, 22)

Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb will shout for joy. For waters will break forth in the wilderness and streams in the Arabah. (Isaiah 35:5-6)

blind, deaf, and lame are healed by the Messiah

And He answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them." (Luke 7:22)

"Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. (Isaiah 42:1)

will minister to Gentiles

"Behold, My Servant whom I have chosen; My Beloved in whom My soul is well-pleased; I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles... "And in His name the Gentiles will hope." (Matthew 12:18-21)

The Spirit of the LORD God is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives, and freedom to prisoners; to proclaim the favorable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn, (Isaiah 61:1-2)

to bind up the brokenhearted

"He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are downtrodden, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord." (Luke 4:18-19)

As the cattle which go down into the valley, The Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. So didst Thou lead Thy people, To make for Thyself a glorious name. (Isaiah 63:14)

gives rest to our souls

"Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light." (Matthew 11:29-30)

He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and like one from whom men hide their face, He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. (Isaiah 53:3)

The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone. (Psalms 118:22)

rejected by His own people, the Jews

He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. (John 1:11)

He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the very corner stone. (Acts 4:11)

Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? (Isaiah 53:1)

not believed

But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him; that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke, "Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" (John 12:37-38)

"Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, And against the man, My Associate," Declares the LORD of hosts. "Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered; and I will turn My hand against the little ones." (Zechariah 13:7)

sheep of the Shepherd scattered

Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, `I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered.'" (Matthew 26:31)

Even my close friend, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. (Psalms 41:9)

Betrayed by a close friend

And immediately he went to Jesus and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. And Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you have come for." Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. (Matthew 26:49-50)

He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth. (Isaiah 53:7)

Silent to accusations

And Pilate was questioning Him again, saying, "Do You make no answer? See how many charges they bring against You!" But Jesus made no further answer; so that Pilate was amazed. (Mark 15:4-5)

I gave My back to those who strike Me, and My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting. (Isaiah 50:6)

spat on and struck

Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, (Matthew 26:67)

And they spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. (Matthew 27:30)

But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)

scourged

Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be crucified. (Matthew 27:26)

Do not let those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me; neither let those who hate me without cause wink maliciously. (Psalms 35:19)

hated without reason

"If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. But they have done this in order that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their Law, `They hated Me without a cause.'" (John 15:24-25)

But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)

vicarious sacrifice

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.... But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6, 8)

"And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him, like the bitter weeping over a first-born. (Zechariah 12:10)

For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. (Psalms 22:16)

pierced through hands and feet

The other disciples therefore were saying to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I shall see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."... Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand, and put it into My side; and be not unbelieving, but believing." (John 20:25-27)

In return for my love they act as my accusers; but I am in prayer. (Psalms 109:4)... yet He Himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors. (Isaiah 53:12)

prayer for His enemies

But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. (Luke 23:34)

My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. (Psalms 22:1)

forsaken by God

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" (Matthew 27:46)

Into Thy hand I commit my spirit; Thou hast ransomed me, O Lord, God of truth. (Psalms 31:5)

committed His Spirit to God

And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into Thy hands I commit My spirit." And having said this, He breathed His last. (Luke 23:46)

For Thou wilt not abandon my soul to Sheol; Neither wilt Thou allow Thy Holy One to undergo decay. (Psalms 16:10)

O LORD, Thou hast brought up my soul from Sheol; Thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. (Psalms 30:3)

But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol; for He will receive me. Selah. (Psalms 49:15)

I shall not die, but live, And tell of the works of the LORD. (Psalms 118:17)

to be resurrected

And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter, `He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He said to you.'" (Mark 16:6-7)

"Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, According to the faithful mercies shown to David. Behold, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. (Isaiah 55:3-4)

Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,...But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. (Jeremiah 31:31)

Establishes a new covenant

for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. (Matthew 26:28)

And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. (Luke 22:20)

But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises... For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their minds, And I will write them upon their hearts. And I will be their God, And they shall be My people. (Hebrews 8:6-10)

Thou hast ascended on high, Thou hast led captive Thy captives; Thou hast received gifts among men, even among the rebellious also, that the LORD God may dwell there. (Psalms 68:18)

The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet." (Psalms 110:1)

His ascension to God's right hand

So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. (Mark 16:19)

and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, (1 Corinthians 15:4)

Therefore it says, "When He ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, And He gave gifts to men." (Ephesians 4:8)

The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. (Isaiah 9:2)

Then it will come about in that day that the nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal for the peoples; and His resting place will be glorious. (Isaiah 11:10)
"I permitted Myself to be sought by those who did not ask for Me; I permitted Myself to be found by those who did not seek Me. I said, 'Here am I, here am I,' To a nation which did not call on My name. (Isaiah 65:1)

the Gentiles will seek the Messiah

For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery, lest you be wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; (Romans 11:25)

"THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT, AND TO THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED." (Matthew 4:16)[1]
