God’s Plan For Your Future

GOD’S PLAN FOR YOUR FUTURE

INTRODUCTION

            There are two things that every human being experiences in this life in which we live.  Every human is born into this world through the birthing process designed by God.  Secondly, every person will face death at some time in the future, unless God brings the time line of this world to a halt.  Many understand such a day to be Judgment Day.  In reality, this day that the Bible tells us about is unknown to man.  It could be tomorrow.  The question for every human being is “When Judgment Day comes, what will my future hold for me?”  Ecclesiastes 9:1-9 highlights the truth concerning everyone’s future, Christian or not (read text).  If you are a believer in Christ, you have reason to celebrate about your future.  If you are not a believer in Christ, listen closely to what Jesus is going to do for those who believe in Him!

PRAYER

CTS:   3 reasons to celebrate your future.

As a believer in Christ, you have reason to celebrate your future, because:

I.          JESUS WILL RETURN FOR YOU          (Is. 2:4; Psalm 2; John 14:1-3)

Explanation

            The fifth statement with New Hope’s Statement of Faith is as follows:

The return of our Lord Jesus Christ will be personal and is imminent. This has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer.

  • Isaiah 2:4 – This text reveals that there is coming day when there will be no more war.  In other words, God’s permanent peace will be established, for the curse of sin will be lifted from this Earth!!

            Psalm 2 also provides excellent commentary in regards to what will happen to those who oppose the Son of God at His coming.  Kings are wise to take such warning.

  • John 14:1-3 – This text relates a discussion between Jesus and those who belong to Him.  Jesus was foretelling what He was about to do.  He was going to heaven to prepare a place for His friends and would return to get them!!

Application

            The point of application for every believer in Christ is to rejoice, knowing that Christ will soon return for you / us!!  When He does, we will finally be set free from the curse of sin that plagues us daily.

            If you don’t know Christ personally, know that Jesus loves you and offers you the opportunity to be with Him in heaven for eternity.  Respond to God’s beckoning call, and ask for the forgiveness of your sins and for Christ to save you.  You will then be able to rejoice with all believers at His return!

            The spectacular return of Jesus from Heaven will not be all that He does.  Jesus will also raise His friends from the dead!  This brings us to our next point.  You have reason to celebrate your future not only because of Jesus returning for you, but because Jesus will also resurrect your body to new life!!

II.        JESUS WILL RESURRECT YOU      (John 5:25-29; 1 Thess. 4:4-18)

Explanation

There will be a bodily resurrection of the dead -- of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord, and of the unbeliever to judgment and eternal separation from God.

  • John 5:25-29 – John relates that there is coming a resurrection in the future.  Those who know Christ will be resurrected to eternal life.  Those who refused to believe in Christ will be resurrected to eternal torment.
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18 – According to Paul’s words, which are actually God’s, everyone who believes in Christ will spend eternity with God!!

            So, what does this mean to you?  If you believe in Christ, you have a hope that unbelievers cannot comprehend.  Whether you live until tomorrow, or until the return of Christ, you belong to Him.  In other words, your future is secure in Christ!

Application

            The point of application for the believer in Christ is to Rejoice in the hope you have in Christ.  God’s word provides continual reassurance of your home with Him in the future.

            You may be asking the question, “Can I lose such a great hope?” If that were to be the case, it would be based upon your behavior or works.  However, the secure future you have cannot be taken away, because it is achieved or given to you through God’s grace alone!  Such information motivates the believer to do the good works God has given Him to bring glory to God!

III.       GOD’S GRACE MAKES IT POSSIBLE      (Ex. 19:5-8; John 1:12-14; Eph. 2:1-10)

Explanation

Our understanding of God’s grace is that Election is the gracious purpose of God, according to which He regenerates, justifies, sanctifies, and glorifies sinners.  All true believers endure to the end. Those whom God has accepted in Christ, and sanctified by His Spirit, will never fall away from the state of grace, but shall persevere to the end.

  • Exodus 19:5-8 – Though God is speaking with Moses concerning Israel, because of what God did for us in Christ, We are part of God’s holy nation in Christ. (Revelation 1:6)
  • John 1:12-14 – This text strips us of any claim the believer may make in regards to a future eternity with God.  It’s God’s doing alone.
  • Ephesians 2:1-10 – We have seen this text before.  Once again, the believer’s future destination to be with God is the result of God’s grace being shown through Christ.

Application

            The point of application for the believer in Christ is not to be afraid of losing eternity with God.  There is nothing you can do to lose your salvation.  Rejoice in the permanent hope you have in Christ!

Conclusion:

              New Hope’s Statement of Faith is one of new hope for the unbeliever.  We, as believers in Christ, believe that Christ will return, just as He said.  We also believe that when Jesus does come, all who are His will be resurrected to be with Him forever.  We also believe that it is not by our doing, but by God’s grace that we will have the privilege of life with Him forever!!  We don’t believe a person can lose salvation.

            However, there are those who say they believe, and are doing many works before God’s people to prove it.  Yet, because they never truly placed their faith in Christ, they will fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).  Don’t be one of them.  Respond to God’s invitation today!!

The return of our Lord Jesus Christ will be personal and is imminent. This has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer.

Isaiah 2:4 (New King James Version)

4 He shall judge between the nations,
      And rebuke many people;
      They shall beat their swords into plowshares,
      And their spears into pruning hooks;
      Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
      Neither shall they learn war anymore.

Psalm 2 (New King James Version)

 1 Why do the nations rage,
         And the people plot a vain thing?
 2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
         And the rulers take counsel together,
         Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,
 3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces
         And cast away Their cords from us.”
 4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
         The Lord shall hold them in derision.
 5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
         And distress them in His deep displeasure:
 6 “Yet I have set My King
         On My holy hill of Zion.”
 7 “I will declare the decree:
         The LORD has said to Me,
         ‘You are My Son,
         Today I have begotten You.
 8 Ask of Me, and I will give You
         The nations for Your inheritance,
         And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
 9 You shall break[a] them with a rod of iron;
         You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”
 10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
         Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
 11 Serve the LORD with fear,
         And rejoice with trembling.
 12 Kiss the Son,[b] lest He[c] be angry,
         And you perish in the way,
         When His wrath is kindled but a little.
         Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

John 14:1-3 (New King James Version)

 1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions;[a] if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.[b] 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

There will be a bodily resurrection of the dead -- of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord, and of the unbeliever to judgment and eternal separation from God.

John 5:25-29 (New King James Version)

25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

1 Thessalonians 4:14-18 (New King James Version)

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.[a]
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Exodus 19:5-8 (New King James Version)

5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
7 So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the LORD commanded him. 8 Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the LORD.

John 1:12-14 (New King James Version)

12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Ephesians 2:1-10 (New King James Version)

 1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
