Incarnate, part 1(John 1:1-51)

One of the greatest and most daunting questions we face as human beings is...Who Am I? Identity is one of the great pursuits of the human soul. For centuries, we have sought for answers to this question in our work, our relationships, and even within our material possessions. Yet, the pursuit remains unanswered and we continue endless search to answer the question. Traditionally, Christmas is the time for the church and the world to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Followers of Christ believe Jesus was the incarnate Son of God, being completely God and completely human all at once. Typically, we look to Christ to reveal the glory of God amongst a people who had forgotten, but what if there is more to his life than this? What if the life of Christ not only reveals the identity of God, but also the identity of those who are made in His image?

Shiny Happy People, Part 3 (1 Corinthians 4:1-13)

We all make judgments every day, ranging from deciding whether or not we have enough time to make it across the crosswalk to deciding how we should spend our money. Part of life is making judgments – to discern what is best and to decide what to do. In this passage in our study of Corinthians, Paul spends time talking about judgments we make towards one another. He points out the difference between judgments that bring life and those that bring hurt and condemnation. And, he shows us how to respond when there is truth in what others are saying, and when we are wrongfully judged.

Questioning Evangelism (Colossians 4:2-6)

Randy Newman, author of the book “Questioning Evangelism”, challenged us to live out our faith in a way that makes people wonder what’s different about us. Speaking from Colossians 4:2-6 Randy urged us to live our lives in such a way that our words are consistent with our actions, where the truth of Christ is in our lives is revealed to those around us.

Shiny Happy People, Part 1 (1 Corinthians 3:1-9)

The church at Corinth looked good from the outside. It was located in one of the more important cities in the Roman Empire and, as such, it was a center for commerce and culture. It was also melting pot of individuals who brought with them an incredibly diverse religious experience. However, the inside of the church was pretty messy. The individuals who made up the church had experienced in some way the person of Jesus and potentially even the cross of Christ but this experience had made little difference in their day to day lives and from the text it seems apparent that it had made no difference in the community of the church. In our portion of Scripture this week, Paul addresses the issue of division in the church at Corinth. Paul begins by addressing the difference that exists between a fleshly Christian and the Christian who is truly spiritual. The second part of the text deals with the behaviors that come from individuals who are living according to the flesh and what that means for the relationships within the church. Paul finishes by clearly revealing that God alone does the work of growing our faith and changing our hearts.
