What a Difference a Day Makes
0 Amens
As hard as it is to believe, the longest of the Ten Commandments deals with one simple thing - taking a day off. It fascinates me that God has more to say about taking a day off than He does about either murder or adultery or stealing. There are 94 words in this commandment--longer than any other commandment. It is almost as if God is saying, "I am deadly serious about this - this is not just a suggestion - this is a command."
I don't mind telling you, I have to ask myself a question, "How in the world did this crack God's top ten?" Think about it - the Lord is going to give ten unbelievably crucially important instructions about how to live your life. He considers them so important that He will literally write them in stone with His little finger and hand-deliver them personally on a mountaintop to a man named Moses. What is one of the mighty pronouncements he makes? "Take a day off!" Then he makes one additional request-use that day to focus on me and recharge your spiritual batteries. Why did the Lord burn one of His top ten commandments to tell us that? Did He just want to make sure He had ten? A nice round number? Could He not think of anything better to do, so He just threw this one in?
Let's face it, to keep this commandment, you have to literally swim against the riptide of the cultural current we face today, because today, Sunday, is fun-day. To take a day off just to think about God and to devote your time to God seems to a lot of people just plain ridiculous.
