DISCIPLESHIP

From Lost to Believer

To move beyond being Christian-ish, WHAT do we believe?

DISCIPLESHIP

NOT Religion, but Relationship

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

Luke 15:1–2

Jesus describes salvation in terms of relationship, not religion

You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: “ ‘These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’”

Matthew 15:7–9

“Love the Lord your God … love people around you.” (Matt. 22:37-38)

Beyond Christianish

begins when we start viewing Jesus in terms of relationship instead of religion.

DISCIPLESHIP

NOT New Acquisition, but Recovery

LOST

Jesus uses the word ‘lost’ deliberately. It says:

  1. Everyone everywhere already belongs to God.
  2. A tragedy has broken that connection.

Becoming a Christian is a restoration of something that should never have been broken.

Beyond Christianish

happens when we view ‘being found’ as a restoration of who were always meant to be, not just ticking the ‘spirituality’ box.

DISCIPLESHIP

NOT Reluctance, but JOY!

The focus in these stories is more about the Rescuer than those rescued.

The Rescuer is marked by … JOY!

[The shepherd] calls his friends and neighbours together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep!’

Luke 15:6

Two Questions That Are Profoundly Significant:

  1. How does God see you?
  2. What does he feel about that?

And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said. 6 He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is.

Deuteronomy 34:5–6

Beyond Christian-ish

  1. Live, knowing it’s relationship, not religion!
  2. Live, knowing being a Christian is not an optional extra, but a recovery of who you were meant to be!
  3. Live, delighting in the Lord’s delight of you!
