Good vs Evil

One-Sided Warfare!

Jesus (and the NT writers) assume the existence of evil spirits

Not everyone ‘back then’ did – e.g., Jews who were Sadducees.

But scripture teaches that evil is not only real but personal. Demons have:

  1. Will (Matt 12.44) 2.    Emotion (James 2.19)
  2. Knowledge (Mk 1.23-24 - humans hadn’t recognised Christ)
  3. Self-awareness (Mk 5.9 - My name is Legion - we are many)
  4. Moral awareness (1 Tim 4:2)

The key question: ‘What did Jesus think?’

He was unsurprised by them.

Such spirits can oppress and possess people.

When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him.

 - Matthew 8:28.

Demon are spirits without bodies that can inhabit people (Ephesians 6:12)

“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order."

-Jesus

Matthew 12:43–44

Implications?

  • Humans were designed for spiritual cohabitation!

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?

1 Corinthians 6:19

  • The Holy Spirit works to make people MORE human. Evil spirits desire to make them LESS.

This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

Mark 5:3–5

How are people possessed?

  • Actively seeking supernatural power, knowledge or connection with anything apart from God.

Dozens of children from Peru school in outbreak of "contagious demonic possession".

  • Deliberate, willful and ongoing sin.

The Power Of Jesus is Absolute Over Demons and Satan

  • They know (and fear!) his identity (James 2:19)

“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. (8:29)

  • They know they are awaiting his judgement.

“Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

The Power Of Jesus is Absolute Over Demons and Satan

  • They know he has complete mastery over their existence.

The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”  (8:31)

  • Matthew deliberately shows Jesus’ authority. He only needs to say one word … “Go!” (32)

Resisting Satan in Your Own Life

Deliberately reject all involvement in occult practices and refuse sinful impulses. (James 4:7)

Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit (Mat. 12:43-45)

Place yourself under the protection of the Name of Jesus by faith in prayer (Acts 16.16)

Practice daily obedience to Jesus, daily feeding on his Word, and ask other Christians for help.
