INTRO: A WORLD WITHOUT LAWS WOULD BE A DANGEROUS PLACE
Persuade you that the law of Christ is a believer's rule of life
Saved by Jesus you now live to please and honour Him
His Law; His Law Is For Life; His Law Is For Living
His Law
JESUS CHRIST IS OUR LAWGIVER AS MOSES WAS FOR ISRAEL
ONE 'GREATER THAN MOSES' IS NOW THE AUTHORITY FOR GOD'S PEOPLE
Heb 3:3 For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honour than the house.
A CHANGE OF COVENANT – OLD TO NEW – ESTABLISHES JESUS CHRIST AS LORD
Heb 8:13 In that He says, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Col 1:18 He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the pre-eminence.
LAW ONCE WRITTEN ON TABLETS OF STONE ARE NOW WRITTEN ON MEN'S HEARTS
Heb 8:10 "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
This Is That Which Paul Refers to as The law of Christ v.2
Heb 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.
As the authority of the Law and the priesthood is the same, Christ became not only a priest, hut also a Lawgiver; so that the right of Aaron, as well as of Moses, was transferred to him. The sum of the whole is, that the ministry of Moses was no less temporary than that of Aaron; and hence both were annulled by the coming of Christ, for the one could not stand without the other. Calvin
Gal 3:24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Gal 3:24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. ESV
JESUS CHRIST IS LORD OF HIS CHURCH – I will build My church Mt 16:18
Matthew 5 Presents Him as Law Giver, establishing his law for his people
THE LAW GIVEN THROUGH MOSES, IS FULFILLED BY HIM, AND HE ESTABLISHES HIS AUTHORITY
Mt 5:21,27,33,38,43 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder, ... adultery, ... swear falsely, ... An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,... love your neighbour and hate your enemy.
Mt 5:44 "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, vv.34, 32; 28, 22
Paul Clearly Has a Contrast In Mind When He speaks of: the Law Of Christ
THE BOOK WAS WRITTEN TO CORRECT THE ERROR OF DEMANDING MOSAIC RITUALS OF XTIANS 3:1ff
The Holy Spirit Is Given To Believers, He Instructs Them How To Live To Please God
Joh 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Ga 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Eph 1:20-22 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church
A CHRISTIAN'S LIFE IS ONE WHERE JESUS IS THEIR LAW GIVER
SURELY THE MEANING OF HIS BEING 'LORD', HIS DOMINION A KINGDOM
THE PREVIOUS REALM OF LAW HAS NOW BEEN SUPERCEDED

Ex 19:5 ‘Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. Jer 22:21 I spoke to you in your prosperity, But you said, ‘I will not hear.’ This has been your manner from your youth, That you did not obey My voice.
UNDERSTANDING THE CHANGE IS ESSENTIAL TO CHRISTIAN LIVING 2:20
Every Believer Is Even Now saved and sanctified by the work christ accomplished 3:13f
THERE'S BEEN A FUNDAMENTAL TRANSFORMATION OF OUR MOTIVATION FOR LIFE
A CHILD OF GOD'S GRACE, THE SUBJECT OF HIS LOVE, IT SHOWS IN LOVE TO OTHERS

A Command That Is The Only Acceptable Foundation Of Evangelical Obedience 5:6,13
Living By Faith Means Trusting Him To Save You And To Direct You In All Of Your Relationships
Joh 15:12 "This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Joh 13:34 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
He loved sinners and gave himself for them (2:20); on the cross he bore the terrible burden of the law’s curse against them (3:13); he set them free from the burden of the yoke of slavery under the law (5:1).
The law of Christ includes all the commandments of the Lord Jesus for His people found in the NT. It may be summarized by the commandment, “that you love one another” (John 13:34; 15:12). Believer's B C
Rom 13:9,10 For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself. Love does no harm to a neighbour; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
1Th 4:9 But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another
1Jo 3:16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
PAUL'S INSTRUCTION IN 6:2 IS AN APPEAL FOR ITS APPLICATION – ITS A CHOICE YOU MAKE
Your Response To Such A Command Reveals The Condition Of Your Heart 5:15-26
Rather Than Being Judgemental, Every Believer Is To Help And Encourage All Who Are Christ's the context the command seems to be directed primarily to the burdens of sin referred to in 6:1.
Sin always has a kind of domino effect in a person’s life. The consequences of one moral failure can be multiplied almost indefinitely. For example, the sin of fornication, sexual union before marriage, may seem natural in the heat of passion. But then the young woman finds out that she is pregnant. And the burdens caused by a moment of sin start to multiply.
The picture here is of two travellers. One overtakes the other, who is carrying a load too heavy to bear, which has caused him to stumble. So he helps the fallen brother to his feet and shoulders part of the burden.
“burdens” represents spiritual weaknesses that can cause a fall. We can help bear such burdens through encouragement, exhortation, and accountability. Something as simple as developing a friendship can have a wonderfully strengthening effect on a weak Christian. J. MacArthur
Ro 12:5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
Ro 12:10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honour giving preference to one another;
Ro 14:13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way. Ro 15:7 Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.
What is the law of Christ? To love God with all your heart, and to love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 22:36–40). J Courson
A CHRISTIAN'S LIFE IS ONE WHERE ALL THAT JESUS SAID IS NOW THEIR INSTRUCTION FOR LIFE
you look upon his people as fellow heirs of eternal life, TO ASSIST ALONG THE WAY
THIS THAT REVOLUTION WHICH DISTINGUISHED THE EARLY CHURCH
Ac 2:45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.
Ac 4:35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.
CHURCHES ARE COMMUNITIES WHERE MUTUAL LOVE AND CARE OPERATE
CONCERNED THAT ALL BELIEVERS ARE VALUED AND ENCOURAGED.
His Law Is For Life: aim at heaven you will get earth “thrown in: aim at earth and you get neither. C.S. Lewis
His Law Is For Living
JESUS CHRIST'S LAW SHOWS IN HOW YOU CONDUCT YOUR LIFE
HIS LAW OF LOVE TO GOD AND MAN CONSTRAINS BEHAVIOUR BEFORE MEN
YOUR PRINCIPLE FOR LIVING IS HONOURING YOUR SAVIOUR BEFORE MEN
1Cor 9:21 not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ
Ac 21:25 "But concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written and decided that they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality."
Mt 5:17,18 "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
CHRISTIAN LIVING IS THE OUTWORKING OF WHAT IT MEANS TO LOVE GOD AND MAN
Mt 22:37,38 Jesus said to him, "‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ "And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
The New Testament Is Full of Specific Instruction Explaining How Love Shows In Life
BELIEVERS ARE CONSCIOUS OF GOD'S MORAL STANDARDS AND LIVE BY THEM
THERE ARE UNCHANGING PRECEPTS WHICH REVEAL HIS STANDARDS TO MANKIND
THEY CAN BE FOUND IN EVERY AGE AND ARE EVEN IMPRINTED ON EVERY MAN'S MIND Rom 2:
Rom 2:14,15 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them)
Men generally, not some men, but all men, show by their acts that they have a knowledge of right and wrong. Hodge
They Are Therefore To Be Found In Christ's Covenant, Informing Us How To Live
Not As A Set Of Rules Necessary For Acceptance With God, But As Expressions Of God's Love
Jn 14:21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."
1Pe 2:15-18 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men— as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. Honour all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh.
1Jo 2:5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.
We expect faithfulness and reliability from things and other people. Does not God expect the same from us? The problem is that in our religious activities we see ourselves as volunteers rather than as duty bound (1 Cor. 9). For a volunteer, almost anything seems acceptable. For a bondservant who is duty bound, faithfulness is expected (Matt. 25:21). M P Green
PAUL'S WORDS REVEAL THAT AS A BELIEVER, HIS PUBLIC LIFE WAS LIVED TO PLEASE GOD – IN CHRIST
Pleasing God Meant That There Were Standards Constraining His Lifestyle
Ro 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.
Ac 24:25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgement to come, Felix was afraid and answered, "Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you."
James 2:21,22 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
He was still under authority, Responsible to God (3:9) and Christ (cf. 4:1) and was enabled by the Spirit to fulfill the law of love (Rom. 13:8-10; Gal. 5:13-25), the opposite of lawlessness (cf. Matt. 24:12). The BKC
He was bound to love, honour, serve, and please the Lord Jesus, not now by the Law of Moses, but by the law of love. He was “enlawed” to Christ. Believer's Bible Commentary
A willingness to do more, not less than the law required. It certainly does not condone sinful activity and compromise in order to “win” some. KJV Bible commentary.
Every believer is under complete legal obligation to Jesus Christ—even though love, rather than the extemalities of the law, is to be the guiding force. J MacArthur

His Law Is For Living: D. L. Moody tells of a wealthy young London banker who wanted to do something for his Master. He hired an aged cabby, and offered to pay his usual fare and tend his horse while he went to hear Moody preach. For two hours the Christian gave a silent testimony outside, while the old man heard the glad tidings inside. If you cannot do great things, you can at least mind a horse! —The Bible Friend
Jesus Our Lawgiver
A WORLD WITHOUT LAWS WOULD BE A DANGEROUS PLACE
Jesus Our Lawgiver:Christ likes us to be obedient to him, though he speaks to us less as a Lawgiver than as a Savior and a Friend. If we refuse to take his yoke upon us and learn of him, how can we reasonably expect to find rest unto our souls?
