Sermons About 1-corinthians-11:17
The Lord's Table Manners
In the early church, believers celebrated sharing of the bread and cup in a fellowship gathering known as the 'love feast'. Unfortunately, this celebration was perverted over time and became a glutonous and drunken event that completely lost its intended meaning. Such behavior is a sinful selfish mockery of Christ's promises and the incalcuable sacrifice He made for us. What God had intended to improve and edify the church body became something negative and divisive. For this, the Lord chose to discipline the Church of Corinth by making some members of the body ill or taking their lives. In 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, Paul explains 5 ways we are to act at the supper of the Lord in order to avoid His discipline. Communion should be a time of commemoration and a proclamation of the Lord's sacrifice. We are to eagerly anticipate His return, for the celebration of communion represents the link between Christ's first coming and His return. Finally, every believer should examine himself for sins against the Lord and then unite ourselves together as the body of Christ. Communion is an opportunity to exercise the wonderful unity and harmony that Christ intends for His body.
