We can be sure
Sometimes in a conversation it takes some time to get to the heart of what the issue. John has hinted all along that the matter he’s concerned about is over knowing. The BIG question in this book? How do we know we have eternal life? Here it is in 13 as his purpose statement; this is why he writes: "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." Look at all the we knows in 18, 19, 20. Here’s our theme: we can know; we can be sure; we can be confident.

The Test of Evidence
How do we know we have eternal life? That’s the BIG question in 1 John. This is how we know, 5:2 is a key phrase; that you may know, 5:13. We know, we know, we know, John keeps saying to his readers. He’s given us a number of tests to check ourselves: the test of obedience, of truth, of love. And now EVIDENCE. The past two centuries have seen rational evidence exalted above all other ideas. “Unless you can prove it to me, I won’t believe”. A few years ago, scientific proof was the ultimate form of proof. But now we recognise that such proof is not what we use in the law-court, nor in discovering historical truth. In those cases we want cumulative evidence, which when pieced together is “beyond reasonable doubt”. The same is true of faith; is there sufficient evidence to believe? And what sort of evidence should we put forward – would our personal experience count? Would the authority of the church be acceptable? Is it a matter of human reasoning? We’ll look at evidence this evening

The Test of Truth
God isn't just loving, He IS love. His love is sacrificial and given without need for response. However, God's love for us evokes a response in the believer, who cannot help but show God's love in their lives. How can we have assurance of our salvation? By comparing our love for our brothers and sisters in Christ with the love shown by God in the sacrificial love that placed Christ on the cross in atonement for our sin.

The Test of Obedience
John writes to correct the fallasy of the Gnostic philosophy. We see that the Christian is connected to God, not by experiencing or knowing God, but by 1) obediance to God, 2) showing love rather than hate, and 3) being God-centred rather than World-centred.

The Gift of Community (1 John 1:1-7)
Christian community is built around our shared experience of the gospel. Community always begins with God, and God gives us community as a means of transforming our lives more and more into the image of his son. However, community is not merely a tool for growth, but also a gift from God for our joy as well as for our good.
