The End: Jesus Shall Return
Although the 'signs and wonders' or antecedent events get a lot of attention, we should not lose sight of the goal, the climax of Christian history, which is the 2nd Coming of Christ. The 2nd Coming is as essential to the overall Christian message as the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ. This sermon looks at the prophecy of the Olivet Discourse and looks at other NT texts that promise the Second Coming. In addition, some preliminary points about the nature of the Second Coming are presented. In future sermons, the concurrent events-- Resurrection/Rapture, Final Judgment, and Final State will be examined. For now, we focus on the reality and glory of the promsed Second Coming of Christ.
The End of the Age and Birth Pains
We begin to dig a little deeper into the teachings of the Olivet Discourse to understand what Jesus taught about "when will all these things take place, and what will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age" . (Mt. 24: 3). The disciples' questions seem to be linked, and Jesus' answer addresses all three questions as if they are linked in some way. The sermon first considers what each question is asking, especially looking at different texts to understand what the 'end of the age' is. Then the other signs of the coming and the end are described. Overall the Olivet Discourse addresses specific events that will occur in the near future from when Jesus spoke (ie. the destruction of the temple) and broadens to describe the signs and events that will precede His Parousia (2nd Coming).
Signs of the Times: What Must Take Place
This sermons introduces the Olivet Discourse and draws out events that must occur before the 2nd Coming of Christ. Continuing with a perspective that views the entire age from Christ's incarnation to the 2nd Coming as the 'last days' or 'the present age', the Olivet Discourse and 2 Thessalonians 2 are studied to identify what will precede Christ's coming. Events could be categorized differently, but in this sermon the following are listed and described: 1) Gospel Expansion,, 2) Signs/Wonders, 3) Great Trouble, 4) Antichrist (Man of Lawlessness). Attempting not to speculate as to detail that the Scriptures do not include, the events are drawn from Scripture and described generally. The Christian should be aware that these events and patterns will characterize this present age.
The End of Days - The Urgency of Christ's Coming 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
The calendar of the ancient Mayan civilization supposedly implied that the world would end this year. Are you worried? I hope not. God's eternal Word has already spoken to this matter. We will not know the exact day or hour but we can be aware of the signs and hopes of the coming greatest event in the history of the world! What does Christ's 2nd coming mean for you today? What if Jesus does come back this year? What are we to do?
