Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
The challenge of saying NO to things contrary to God's law.
The Fourth Man in the Fire
Today Pastor Wood looks in Daniel at the life of Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego. Today we look specifically at "The Fourth Man in the Fire". King Nebuchadnezzar built the 90 foot tall statue for all of his people to worship. Worship of idols was common in the Babylonian empire and a decree from Nebuchadnezzar to worship this statue also established his position as the supreme ruler of the land. These three men stood for God and were willing to serve Him, no matter what. But who was the fourth man in the fire? He wasn't thrown in with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Why was the fourth man in the fire? Where was the fourth man in the fire? What is your 'furnace' today? Are you looking for and depending on the "Fourth Man in the Fire" as you face troubles and trials in your life?
Be Still...Are We Able?
Our world is a mess (just watch the evening news); yet God is sovereign. How does that compute? Quite often the last thing we (humans) want to do is "be still" - we are so prone to fix things. Yet there is such comfort in knowing that God is Gracious and that God is Sovereign. Yet for God's Sovereignty to be comforting some aspects of it must be understood. What can we learn from a Jewish perspective of God's Sovereignty in the book of Daniel?
Image Building = All of Our Insecurities at Work
Image Building = All of Our Insecurities at Work Daniel Chapter three Six ways to know if this image in Babylon is defining us: 1. Attempting to make impressions that are bigger than we really are.(1) 2. Needing the strokes of VIPs. (2, 3) 3. Self-worship “I am, and there is none besides me.†(Isa. 47:8, 10) 4. Setting up situations where others are motivated to worship us(4-7) 5. Making demanded displays of loyalty. (8-15) 6. Anger when our elaborate self-scheme is opposed. (13, 19) Three tests of our faith brought on by the fire. 16-27 (Hebrews 11) 1. Deliverance faith – we can be delivered from the fire. 2. Enduring faith – we can be delivered through the fire. 3. Commended (graduating) faith – we can be delivered by the fire into the arms of Jesus. The three friends were already committed to the flames before they knew precisely what form of deliverance they would experience. Complete deliverance by Jesus, the fourth man in the fire, means that only the ropes (i.e. those things that bind us) are removed in the fire. We are refined with no hair singed, without the smell of smoke and only what’s “fake†is burned.
