Acts 24
They had treated Paul like the plague - nothing but trouble ... stirs up riots ... arrested (Ch.21) ... ringleader of a sect/heresy ... a Nazarene ... But, Jesus Christ is the strong medicine. Paul was brought before Felix with 3 charges against him: Paul was accused of 1) being a trouble maker, 2) being the ringleader of a sect, and 3) desecrating the temple. All of which were punishable by capital punishment. Paul was respectful and got to his defense: 1) His accusers were not in court (case should have been thrown out); 2) According to the Way, he did not lead a sect/heresy group - search the scriptures (i.e. v.14 - in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets). 3) He had always taken great pains to having a clear conscience before God and man; 4) He was not desecrating the temple, but was found in the temple keeping a vow, purifying himself - he was not there to start trouble. Felix's wife was a young Jewess, this was her second marriage. Her great grandfather was Herod the Great - who had wanted to kill baby Jesus so killed all male children under two years of age. Therefore, she had a terrible heritage. (v.24) Felix and his wife sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus (v.25) But as he was discussing righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and said, “Go away for the present, and when I find time I will summon you.” As with Felix, one can have accurate knowledge and still not be saved. One needs faith - biblical faith. Learn to deny sin. Righteousness is demanded; righteousness He supplies. Jesus Christ is the strong medicine against sin.
