The gospel brings us a new status- that of sons. Like the Galatians, we can slip back into living like slaves. But the Father sent His Son to redeem us that we might receive adoption as sons, and the Spirit to experience this status subjectively.

The Christian "rite of Passage" is baptism. Baptism is an outward demonstration of an inward reality. It takes a lot of water. It takes going down into the water, a burial beneath the water and a coming up out of the water. This symbolizes us burying the old and becoming new in Christ.
