Putting the U in chUrch: Followers May 12, 2013 (Mother’s Day) Text: Ephesians 4:11-16; I Timothy 4:11-16 Key Thought: Learning to follow Christ more closely is a function of God’s church – and we do it together. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. Ephesians 4:13, NLT
The ministry of adoption
God has created the church - a group of people - to demonstrate his love to the world through service to others, including the ministry of adoption - of finding room in our lives for the less fortunate and those that need us. It's His church, not ours, and it's people, not a building, and it's there to give, not to take. Text is Acts 19:11-30, NASB, as the early church begins to reach out beyond its natural borders of people groups and take its message to the world, especially by helping people.
Barnabas
Biography: Barnabas April 28, 2013 Text: Acts 15:35-41; I Corinthians 13:4-7 Key Thought: Barnabas’ life shows that believing in people like God does is essential to following Christ. After some time Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s go back and visit each city where we previously preached the word of the Lord, to see how the new believers are doing.” Barnabas agreed and wanted to take along John Mark. Acts 15:36-37, NLT
Character
I.D. – Character April 21, 2013 Text: Romans 5:1-5; Philippians 1:11-14, 3:17-20 Key Thought: The character God builds through our toughest times makes us shine as we follow Christ. We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. Romans 5:3-4, NLT
Behave
I.D. – Behave April 14, 2013 Text: Colossians 3:1-17; James 1:19-22 Key Thought: Christ changes our behaviour, from doing what comes naturally to doing what radiates his life. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. Colossians 3:17, NLT
Attitude
I.D. – Attitude April 7, 2013 Text: Philippians 2:1-11; Romans 8:31-34; Hebrews 11:1,6 Key Thought: A Christ-like attitude comes from faith in God, and brings security, humility and confident hope. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Philippians 2:3-5, NLT
The Three Last Prayers of Jesus
Prayer: Living the Connect – The Three Last Prayers of Jesus (and how YOU are involved) Easter Sunday 2013 Text: John 17:20-23; Matthew 26:36-44; Luke 23:32-43; John 10:10 Key Thought: Joining in the death and new life of Jesus brings morality, community and meaning to our lives. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. John 17, NLT
Hearing
Prayer: Living the Connect – Hearing Palm Sunday 2013 Text: Galatians 5:16-26; John 10:27-29 Key Thought: God wants us to hear from Him, which involves not only listening but also being ready to obey. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Galatians 5:25, NLT
Case Study - Abraham
Prayer: Living the Connect – Case Study: Abraham March 17, 2013 Text: Genesis 18:16-33; James 5:13-18 Key Thought: To pray for others is to partner with God in the furthering of His plan for them and for us, too. And the Lord replied, “If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.” Genesis 18:26, NLT
Methods
Prayer: Living the Connect – Methods March 10, 2013 Text: Matthew 6:5-13; I Timothy 2:1-4 Key Thought: A way to deepen our relationship with Christ is to approach praying in an organized way. But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. Matthew 6:6 NLT
