The Gospel Frees Us From Guilt
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Once you understand the value of Jesus’ sacrifice, your notion of freedom is forever changed. You’ll discover that the most freeing thing in the world is to give yourself over entirely to the one you love, and this is exactly what happens in the gospel. The good news about Jesus is that he grants us freedom from our toughest struggles, our deepest scars, our strongest doubts, and our biggest fears. When you find Jesus, you find true freedom. ___________________________ The 3rd of 10 sermons in the Emancipation Proclamation Series at Remnant Church in Richmond, Virginia.

Can we be good without Jesus?
The question, can we be good without Jesus, draws a variety of responses. This is because it can be taken in more than one way. Reactions to it range all the way from emphatic "No way!" to "Of course you can! Why would you say otherwise?" The way we answer this question depends upon what we think about Jesus, about goodness, and about ourselves. Key Passage: Romans 3:19-26

We believe in the Bible
As a church we have a statement of faith that encapsulates what we believe. That's all very well, but so what? What are the consequences of our belief - how does it affect the way we live our lives? In this world we live surrounded by words, which can often be deceptive - media, politicians, advertising - all can spin meaning to have us believe someting other than the truth. But the Bible, God's word, is consistent and reliable. God speaks in two ways - 1. to all people with a wordless voice - through His creation. However, wordless communication is often ambiguous or at best easily misunderstood. And 2. to His people through His word. God's word has three main effects - it bring life, wisdom and joy - an inner connection with God. Verse 7: God's word is trustworthy, making wise the simple - Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Compare the time you spend feeding on the Word of God with the time that the world is bombarding you with its untrustworthy words... Is this ok? Do you need to correct the balance? How joyful do you feel when your love talks to you? How much greater when your God talks to you? But in delight, let His word affect our lives - how we behave, the choices we make. It is this delightful response that glorifies God, and in our confession that we declare Him worthy of Lordship over us.

Jesus
It's about Jesus, it's always been about Jesus, it will always be about Jesus... in the closing chapter of the letter of 1 John, the apostle John is driving home what it means to know, love and obey Jesus. There should be no mistake that Jesus is not like other religious leaders. He is totally exclusive by his claims to be the "only" way -John 14:6. He is also totally inclusive in providing the forgiveness for sins for everyone. When one understands who Jesus is, he/she should respond to his call to "come and follow me".

They Believed
As we see the women come to the tomb in John 20 it begins a flow of events that encompass a week as Jesus reveals Himself to His disciples. In the course of this time they realize that God had spoken of these events before hand through the Scriptures and through Jesus' own words to the disciples. It was when their experience was corroborated by the Word of God that faith became real. It is so important to realize this even for us as 21st century believers. Our faith must be what God says it must be. Faith in our faith is worthless, faith in God's Word is what saves.
