Coaching the Basics...Motivation
“It’s Sunday. We have to go to church.” How often have we heard ourselves say that? But is church just something we go to or is it something more? Isn’t church something we “belong to?” If Jesus said the church is like a flock, I don’t go to a flock, I belong to the Shepherd. If the church is like a bride, I don’t go to a wedding, I belong to Jesus and He belongs to me. If the church is like a body, I belong to every part of it and every part of it belongs to me. These are great metaphors, but what does it mean to belong? What are the basics of church? The Apostle Paul coached a young church starter, named Titus, with a hand full of basics that every church needed to practice. As Paul coaches us in these basics, let’s discover where we each belong in God’s church plan.

One Family
We’re in a message series called One Thing. The apostle Paul said: Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV) This “one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…” What’s the goal? To be like Jesus. Paul was focused on one thing: Becoming like Christ. Many of you have made a commitment to Christ. You’ve surrendered your life to Him as Savior and Lord. But you’ve lost focus. You started out focused on Christ, but He is no longer the organizing principle of your life. He isn’t the focus. Perhaps we’ve made following Christ too complicated. We’ve forgotten that following Christ means we have to hang out with the other disciples. Can you hear Peter saying? “Sure Jesus, I’ll follow you, but do I have to hang out with Judas over there?” No, following Christ, we become one of His disciples together. Connecting together as we follow Christ has a sharpening effect. It sharpens our focus on Christ. As it says in Proverbs 27:17 (NIV) "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." In the book of Romans the apostle Paul told the Roman Christians that even though they had followed Christ by an individual decision they must recognize that in following Him they had become one body, connected to other believers. When we follow Christ we make must make an individual decision to follow, but that leads to a corporate identity. We become the body of Christ connected to every other believer.

Sunday Sermon for Week 32-09
God is over us always. He covers, guides, protects, empowers, directs, He works through us, and He is in us. This is the doctrine of God and us. We manifest that unity as His body on the earth. In addition, we are put here together to work out our salvation together. There exists together this combined theology of unity and uniqueness.

3 Pictures of the Church
So many people have a distorted view of the church. Some people think steeples, others think candles and still others think irrelevant or not for me. The church is meant to be God's people on mission as God's agent - right here and right now. Christ gave some good pictures to describe the church in the New Testament. Family, Body and Bride are three of the most powerful ways to describe what the church is meant to be.

Understanding Our Depravity 2
At the very center of your being, where your decisions are made and your actions are formed you and I are evil. That my friends is an ugly picture. The Lord Jesus said, “If you being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children…” This morning we deal with two of three areas that sin has affected in us which is our entire being. 1. Our bodies are depraved because of sin. 2. Sin has affected our minds.
