Avoiding Over Confidence
In life, we tend to look for things smaller than Jesus to satisfy us. Scripture tells us that He is the vine and we are the branch. We can do nothing apart from Him. Jesus plus nothing equals everything. To abide in Christ, the first step is to put our faith in God. To avoid over-confidence of trying to handle life on on own, we need to tap into the life sources, recognize the insignificance of pursuits that aren't anchored to Jesus, keep taking risks for Jesus, and let go of self-sufficiency and pride.
What You Can and Cannot Do
Scripture: Acts 8:26-40, John 15:1-8, Isaiah 5:1-7 The vineyard in Isaiah is the nation of Israel. However, in John, Jesus identifies himself as the vine and God as the garden in which the vine grows and we are the branches of the vine. Only thru these connections do we hope to produce fruit. If we fail to be productive, if we do not abide by Jesus, we will become separated from Jesus. God wants to be connected to us thru Jesus, if we desire to be connected to Him. God finds glory and joy when we are fruitful in our life.
Proving Your Identity
Who are you? To know who you are, you need to know from where you came. Perhaps historical documents, DNA tests, etc. will help find out who you are? But Jesus Christ said "I am the true vine," and "you are the branches." We have been grafted to God through Christ Jesus. And not just so that we can have life, but so that we might also bear fruit. Yes, DNA tests may tell us about our physical ancestry. But the Word of God tells us of our spiritual ancestry. God has given us grace and forgiveness through Christ Jesus! He has given us identity and purpose!
The Righteous Rule of the Shepherd King
Jeremiah speaks against the rulers of the day, who failed to care for the people, and contrasts them to good shepherds that the Lord will appoint. But Jeremiah then speaks of a greater Shepherd, the righteous Branch, who will be in very nature righteous and will reign in justice and wisdom.
Fruit Bearers
We can't talk about fruit bearing without the source of the one who produces the fruit. Jesus is the source of life, the one who is the true vine who feeds the branches and who makes the fruit.
God's Grapevine
God has chosen us and ordained us to go and bear fruit for His Kingdom!
