You Have Gained Your Brother
Patrick preached on Matthew 18 and the instructions that Jesus gives us for confronting sin and misunderstanding between members of the Church. We are given specific instructions to deal with these issues, but the intent is not justice or upholding the law, but to heal and restore relationships. We should always approach conflict directly, and with the aim of regaining our brother or sister.
Brother and Companion
In Revelation 1:9 John begins to describe the first part of the vision that he had one Sunday on the Isle of Patmos. We will examine how John identifies himself, the voice of the One who speaks to him and more detail about the Churches this letter is written to. I. What does John tell us about himself? A. Who he is to them? (Revelation 1:9) 1. Their brother and companion a. Whoever does the will of God is Jesus brother (Matthew 12:50) b. We are to love our brothers and sisters (I John 3:14) c. Outdo each other in showing honor (Romans 12:10) 2. Brother and Companion in tribulation a. Our suffering allows us to help others who suffer (II Corinthians 1:3, 4) b. We need to pray for each other in tribulation (II Corinthians 1:11) c. When one part suffers we all suffer (I Corinthians 12:26) d. We help our brothers and sisters in need (I John 3:17, James 2:15, 16) 3. Brother and Companion in the kingdom – Members of a redeemed community a. God wants to give us the kingdom (Luke 12:32) b. Those who do the will of the Father are in the kingdom (Matthew 7:21) c. Citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20) 4. Brother and Companion in patient perseverance – together we wait a. We eagerly await together (Philippians 3:20) b. Eagerly await the return of Jesus and new bodies (Romans 8:23, I Corinthians 1:7) B. Where he was (Revelation 1:9, 10) 1. On the Island of Patmos 2. In the Spirit – He was meditating and listening to the Holy Spirit 3. On the Lord’s Day – Sunday, the day of Jesus’ resurrection C. Why was he there? 1. For the word of God 2. For the testimony of Jesus Christ II. The vision begins (Revelation 1:11) A. John hears a voice behind him – loud like a trumpet B. What the voice says 1. I am the Alpha and Omega – the First and Last 2. What you see (and hear) write down C. We know from the verses following that the one who is speaking is the Son of God 1. Send what you write to the seven churches in Asia 2. He names them The way John sees Himself is the way we ought to see ourselves. We are a family, all brothers and sisters in the family of God. We stand together in tribulation. We are part of a Kingdom separate from this world. We need to patiently persevere together.
Servanthood
God makes it clear if you love Him you will obey His commands. Love God, He is Love. Therefore Love your brother as He commanded.
