The Purpose of Suffering
It is Gods will to shape us into the image of His son, Jesus Christ. But, how does he accomplish this? James tells us that it begins with the testing of our faith, leads us towards patience, and ultimately brings us to maturity. There are many reasons that we resist such tests and trials, but the bottom line is this: trials are the very things God uses to mold us into the image of Christ—and there is no shortcut. Key Verses: Rom 8:28-29, Php 2:1-8, James 1:2-4, Php 4:11-13, 2Cor 11:23ff, 2Tim 4:6-8

Why the Local Church? (Ephesians 4:11-16)
In God's design, the local church is to serve as 1) a place to hear God's word preached and applied in a systematic way; 2) a place to put our commitment to God, and to one another, into practice; 3) a context for us to mature; 4) a place to discover and practice our ministry and spiritual gifts with perspective and leadership; 5) a protection from doctrinal error; 6) a place to demonstrate the gospel; and 7) a place to preserve and cultivate the fruit of the gospel.

Stewards of the Story in Our Silence
2 Timothy 1:3-12 Once we have fallen in love with the Gospel and shudder at the thought of His amazing grace, what then? Before we run after every unbeliever we know, we must learn to steward the story of the Gospel in Silence. Laboring, through the power of the Spirit, to build the inner components of spiritual character. Does your life, before you ever open your mouth to speak of Jesus, speak of Jesus? As stewards, we must carefully and diligently pay attention to our own lives so as to not obscure the story of God.

Psalm 41
In the media, we see role models scrutinized for breaches of integrity, from politicians to sports figures. What does it mean to be a person of integrity? People of integrity have character and consistency. And, as we see in the story of the rich, young ruler, sometimes Jesus gives us big challenges to test our integrity, radical requests to alter our life's course and follow his way.

2 Samuel 21:15-22 - Courage for Insurmountable Enemies
In the last half 2 Samuel 21 we find david gaining victory over 4 giant enemies. There is debate on whether the word "giant" is to be taken in its regualr sense as a big person, or as a god, but the evidence of the context would favor the first viewpoint. Another issue here is the identification of Goliath. Some see a corruption of the original text, but it is better to see this as a copies error which 1 Chronicles 20:5 correst and itentifies the giant as the "brother of Goliath." During battles David has grown weary and is not as stong physically as he use to be. His loyal leaders come to his aid and fight for him defeating all 4 giants. What we learn is that no what the physical ability of a man, he better not trash talk God people, because he will be silenced. We see the benefits of realistic humility, steadfast perseverance, proper praise, and developed character. The purpose of the passage is to elicit in you courage against insurmountable enemies as you live a persistent godly life that sustains you in the direction of God and his will.

Developing Christian Character
Faith is foundational to Christian character because it provides me with everything I need and leads to radical change. Also, focus is essential to character growth. To develop our character we must make it a priority, measure our progress and remember what Jesus has done for me.

Better on the Other Side
There are many trials we go through, but we can be better on the other side by claiming to be a victor, not a victim. We can cherish our walk down the testing line of life knowing that we're developing perseverance and character.

Character: Qualities of a God-Shaped Life
Pastor Larry unpacks another priority of our church: "equipping people for maturity and ministry" God does not want us to make ourselves better people, He wants to form the character of Christ in us. Speaking from Micah 6:8 Larry shows us what the character of Christ might look like in us if we allow God to shape our lives.

Standing in the Face of Trouble
Many prophecies have been given about God's plan for this area. What will it take to prepare us for our part in seeing these things come to pass? The history of recent moves of God to transform cities and nations reveals that most of them came because of very difficult times. What then will prepare us to stand in times of trouble? Two characteristics which are necessary are Godly character that will not be moved, and tested faith that will believe what God says regardless of what the circumstances look like.
