Wise Men and Fools
Matthew 2:1-18 As we contemplate the birth of the Son of God on this Christmas Eve, our thoughts often go to the visit of the Magi to see the newborn King of the Jews. This story, however, is perhaps one of the most embellished stories in the Bible. Lack of detail in the Bible about the wise men and their fate have given rise to many misconceptions about the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The story of "the three wise men" is but one example of such embellishment. But nowhere in scripture does it tell us how many there were or what they were like, or that they visited Jesus on the night of His birth. Tonight, Pastor Ramey examines the story of the Magi in Matthew Chapter 2. Verses 1-18 reveal three ways that people respond to Jesus Christ: 1. Belligerence (exemplified by King Herod, who ignored Christ) 2. Indifference (The religious leaders ignored Christ) 3. Reverence (The Magi worshiped Christ) The first two responses are foolish, but the third is wise. More importantly, we can see ourselves characterized by one of these three responses. When examined in this context, we can also see that the story of the Magi is really about how it is a wise thing to fear the Lord and honor Him. Have you bowed a knee as the Magi did and are you a worshiper of Christ? To receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior is indeed the wisest thing you will ever do in this life. May your life be transformed as you celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, the author of salvation. Have a Blessed and Merry Christmas!
