He Is Christ The Lord
Christ is Lord. The details of God's choosing to send Jesus in the fullness of time is so fascinating and inspires us to worship during Christmas and throughout the year.
First to Worship
How do you respond when your enemies fall in worship before the Lord? That question might sound like a hypothetical debate for us today, but for the original readers of Matthew’s gospel account they had to face it head on. The very first people to engage in formal worship of the newborn king were from “the east.†We might call them the “Babylonian worship team.†The enemies and oppressors of the Jews were on their face in worship. Wow! What a paradigm shift! Key Passages: Matthew 2:1 & Isaiah 49:6
An Unlikely God
Christmas dreams are ending this week. With the opening of gifts and the disposing of the wrapping, the mystery is gone and all is known—at the least all the gifts. Now, that long list of gifts will be put on the shelf until next year. And on that list will be the things you wanted, but you knew was unlikely. It just wasn’t going to happen this year. But around the tree might be some things that you weren’t expecting. They were unlikely—as, in “Wow, didn’t even think about that one.” In those things is a small taste of what Christmas is actually about. You see, Christmas is the most unlikely event in the history of the universe from a most unlikely source—the one true and living God. It is something that defies imagination. Even the smartest people in the world would not have come up with the idea of God the Son taking human flesh. Not only that, but it involves a series of the most unlikely circumstances. Today, we consider an unlikely God doing unlikely things in order to bring hope to humanity.
Here I Am
Remember being scared as a child? It didn’t take much. A dog. The darkness. The monster under the bed. Or a host of other things. he reassuring presence of a parent seemed to make all troubles go away. Their simple presence made us feel secure and safe. There was a big person there to handle problems. God’s people, his children, often face the same sorts of fears. The dog, darkness, and monsters have been replaced with other things, far more significant and life-changing. For Israel in the Old Testament, it was foreign nations, separation from their homes, and slavery. For believers in the New Testament, it is jobs, finances, health, family, or even life itself. When troubles loom large, it is easy for God’s people to forget that God is always present and always at work. God, in his grace, came to us to remind us that He is here. He is not unconcerned with our plight. Instead, He has made great and amazing promises that give cause for great joy. Christmas is only the beginning of it.
A World in Waiting
The hope of Christmas was a wait long coming. For thousands of years, the promise of God had gone unfulfilled. But finally, the wait was over.
