Sermons About Colossians
Pleasing Jesus
“Because Your mine, I walk the line.” Those words of the familiar Johnny Cash hit could have been penned by the Apostle Paul nearly 2000 years ago. In the letter to the Colossians, Paul motivates us to follow Jesus wherever He takes us. He repeatedly points out the need for us to grasp the significance of our position in Christ and how our walk is transformed by His presence in our lives. In this short letter, Paul refers to Jesus by name more than 50 times. As we work our way through this letter over the next couple months, the significance of this will become evident. Paul’s objective is clear to point the Colossians to Jesus Christ and encourage their walk in Him. The equation that we will find in Colossians is Jesus + nothing = Life. This is not the equation that the world proposes to us, Jesus + our job, our family, our friends, our car, our hobbies, our (you fill in the blank). This isn’t even the question that the church has proposed for much of history, Jesus + works, Jesus + tradition, Jesus + experience, Jesus + ____ (you fill in the blank). With all these obstacles that are placed in our path it is no wonder that we have trouble walking the line. Fortunately for the Colossians and for us, Paul knows that in Christ we can walk the line.

Consistently Christian: The Marks of a Jesus-centered Church
This morning I’m here to tell you that church doesn’t have to be like that, and Colossians 3:15-17 is a great text to remind us about what a Jesus-centered church looks like. What are the marks of a consistently Christian church? Now that is an important question and one worth answering.

Colossians 1:24-2:5
Paul describes his ministry, to the church at Colosse, as being a servant to the church tasked with proclaiming Jesus. In Jesus, the mystery of God's redemptive plan is completely revealed, and fulfilled. Furthermore, the pathway to Christain maturity is found in nothing, and no one, else but Jesus.

Colossians 1:24-25
Colossians 1:24-25 Before launching into the main section of his letter, Paul introduces himself in some detail. He explains his ministry in light of the gospel, seeing himself as continuing the ministry of Jesus. Paul's ministry could rightfully be summarized as suffering for the body of Christ in order to make Jesus known among the nations. In these few dense verses, Paul explains this summarization.

New Man or Old Man?
Being a follower of Jesus results in a remarkably different life. Or that is the way that it is supposed to be or should be. The power of gospel (trusting Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins) is the way in which it changes hearts. Jesus makes us new men and women, he fills us with the Spirit, and the divinely-designed result is a life whose orientation and actions are different than our self-centered, me-absorbed culture. The new man, with Christ at the center, lives a remarkably different life, and Colossians 3:8-11 helps us understand what this new man looks like and does.
