In God's design, the local church is to serve as 1) a place to hear God's word preached and applied in a systematic way; 2) a place to put our commitment to God, and to one another, into practice; 3) a context for us to mature; 4) a place to discover and practice our ministry and spiritual gifts with perspective and leadership; 5) a protection from doctrinal error; 6) a place to demonstrate the gospel; and 7) a place to preserve and cultivate the fruit of the gospel.

Analyzing Authenticity (Romans 2:17-29)
Paul challenges his readers not to base our confidence before God in our religious pedigree, family history, bible knowledge, Christian education, or any other experience or practice. There are many good things we ought to pursue, but there is a danger in craving man's approval rather than God's, and none of these things will secure our standing before God. Our only hope is the gospel, pleading for mercy rather than justice, and trusting in Christ's dying for sinners. Once we have trusted, we are freed to do good works rightly -- not so that we can be saved, but out of love and gratitude, as an overflow of our changed hearts. The essence of a true Christian is a changed heart.

The Coming Day of Wrath (Romans 2:1-16)
We live in light of the coming day of wrath, first, by thinking rightly of the sin of others; we are no better than others and must not presume on God's grace. Second, by giving ourselves to good works, not as an attempt to save ourselves, but in faithfulness, gratitude and love. Third, by thinking rightly of those who have never heard the gospel; their problem is not that they have not heard, but that they have seen God and rejected him. The only way that we will escape the judgment of God is through Jesus's death, sacrifice, and washing our sins away.

Acts 9 : From Enemy to Emissary - The Conversion of Saul
Back at the end of Acts chapter 7 we meet a young man named Saul. It was he who held everyones cloaks so they could throw rocks at Stephen more easily. He gave consent to his murder. Here in Chapter 9 we encounter Saul once again. Luke tells us Saul went on a manhunt to arrest followers of the WAY – the new sect of Judaism which was, as he saw it a false religion that needed to be snuffed out. And Saul was committed to doing everything he could to make that happen...that was until Saul met Jesus along the way.
