Sermons About Crowded
Part 1: The Average Heart
We often don’t spend time analyzing the Advent and Christmas carols we so often hear and sing in December. Yet a common thread among many of them is probing how our heart responds to Jesus and His coming. One phrase from “What Child is This?†preaches, “let loving hearts enthrone Him.†“Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus†beseeches God: “rule in all our hearts alone.†Perhaps the most poignant of all, though, comes from the first verse of “Joy to the World,†which proclaims, “let every heart prepare Him room.†It’s recalling Bethlehem on the night of Mary and Joseph’s arrival - crowded, overbooked - and cleverly using the city as a metaphor for the human heart. Is there room in our heart for Christ, or do we find ourselves overbooked? Many Christians jump straight to Christmas when they hit December. But the Church has a beautiful tradition, called Advent, to provide a season of preparation for Christmas. These next four weeks, our explorations in the Bible will meander around how we go about letting our hearts “prepare Him room.†Many of you may think this a well-worn theme (“oh, I’ve heard this beforeâ€). Our encouragement to you is: Don’t get too comfortable. God just might come at you from new angles this Advent season!
