John 3:9-15 - This is Jesus: The Son of Man, Lifted Up for All Who Will Believe in Him
How does one enter the Kingdom of God? How can one be purified and cleansed of their sins? Those are questions that almost every religion on the face of the earth is trying to answer. In order to be pure, you do not try hard to be a good person, to give alms, to fast, to pray, and to balance your karma. These cannot purify an already impure soul. Instead, you simply look to Jesus. You believe that he was crucified for your sins and raised from the dead. And, if you believe that, then you have eternal life. That is the only way to enter the kingdom—by looking at Jesus and believing.

The Death of Jesus, Part 1 (Mark 15:16-39)
The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark highlights the irony that Jesus is mocked as king, but he is in fact king of all. Jesus suffers not only physical pain, but also the very wrath of God, in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and types, and to secure our salvation and life by suffering in our place. We are no longer separated from the presence of and fellowship with God, and in fact the crucifixion reveals clearly God's love for us. The only proper response is for us to worship in awe and gratitude.

A Strange Hedonism
The American Heritage Dictionary defines "hedonism" as the “pursuit of or devotion to pleasure.†The Jewish historian Josephus called crucifixion “the most pitiable death.†Cicero called it “that cruel and disgusting punishment.†It was a horrific and shameful execution, calculated to maximize the suffering of a criminal. Do crucifixion and hedonism have anything to do with each other? YES!
