Hypocrisy and Legalism: Death Masquerading as Life
Luke 11:37-12:3 In this text, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and Scribes who had substituted a man-made system for heartfelt love and pursuit of God. Built on hypocrisy, legalism claims to offer life, but in reality, it leads only to death.

You Shall Not Murder (Exodus 20:13)
In the sixth commandment, God forbids murder. This determines our response to the tragedy of abortion. But this also reminds us that anger and hatred toward one another are serious sins in God's sight. Forgiveness and life are only to be found in the one perfect one who was murdered for our sake, Jesus Christ.

Acts 20:1-12 - Power Over Death
Acts 20 starts with Paul traveling through Macedonia and Greece encouraging the believers there. While teaching the believers in Troas Paul spoke so late into the night that a young man fell asleep and tumbled out of the upstairs window to his death. God then worked a miracle through Paul and brought the young man back to life, demonstrating that He is powerful enough to fulfill His promise to one day raise those who believe in Jesus from death and bring us to live with Him forever. Since we have this great hope and promise we should not cling to this life but be content in the face of physical danger and death, knowing that the sting has been removed from death and it is now instead a doorway into eternal life with Christ.

Afraid of the Dark?
Continually through the Gospel of John we see that the disciples are called to act and live like Jesus. And so even here in John 8, as Jesus is the Light of the World, it becomes clear that his disciples are called to reflect the Light to the world around them.

John: The Incarnation and the Mission of God Part 2
John takes us first backwards to remind us of our created purpose (have life by feasting on the glory of God), and then forward to the restoration of this life and light in Christ. We are created to glorify God (Isaiah 43:7). When we view God as a means to an end--instead of the end--we remain in the darkness (rejection of Him) and seek after other means for temporal pleasure.
