Sermons About Deborah
Deborah, Judges 4 & 5
Yet again, God's people have turned away from God and He has handed them over to a cruel oppressor, whose powerful army is led by Sisera. They suffer for 20 years before finally crying out to God, upon which God raises up Deborah. She's not like the other judges; she settles disputes, acts as a mother to Israel, and she's a prophetess. Barak reluctantly leads the army of God's people, on condition that Deborah accompanies them! God once again demonstrates His sovereign power by utterly defeating Sisera's powerful army, and even Sisera is killed at the hands of a woman. He is held accountable for his cruelty to God's people. Throughout Judges, God sends individuals to rescue His people, pointing us to Jesus, the ultimate rescuer. So we learn two things: 1. God ALWAYS wins. Those who oppose Him are ALWAYS crushed. We can use this fact to ready ourselves in case we experience REAL opposition. 2. We should be people who praise God for His message, that tells us about His sovereign power.

Deborah and Barak: Awakened for Action!
Judges 4 and 5 During a desperate time in Israel, God awakened Deborah and Barak to see that the only way the nation could escape the stifling tyranny of the Canaanite King Jabin was to meet his superior forces in battle. On the surface, it appeared to be a substantial mismatch... but only if the power of God was left out of consideration. Instead, God not only motivated Deborah and Barak to attempt the impossible, He raised up the people to fight, and opened up the heavens to pour out the rain, and the battle was won. Every time we read about a Judge/Deliverer we remember that our deliverance was accomplished only as God sent His Son/Deliverer to appease God's wrath, overcoming the forces of sin that held us fast.
